Can somebody point me to a mid or low velocity hollow point load that is not too expensive. I want it for carry but I need it to be cheap enough that I can test it and practice with it.
Thanks.
Thanks.

View Full Version : Recomend a mid velocity 10mm load? frank4570 03-31-2006, 17:07 Can somebody point me to a mid or low velocity hollow point load that is not too expensive. I want it for carry but I need it to be cheap enough that I can test it and practice with it. Thanks. Ron3 03-31-2006, 22:01 www.georgia-arms.com Look under "shear power plus" Good ammo, about $15/50, new ammo w/Gold Dot bullets. Also consider Winchester Silvertip and Hornady XTP's. Both can be found for about $10/20. frank4570 04-01-2006, 06:45 Perfect. That's exactly what I want. Thanks! agtman 04-01-2006, 14:07 Agree with Ron3's comments. For factory 10mm loads at mid-range velocities, these are good ones: * Hornady's 180gn XTP @ 1180fps/556fpe; * Georgia Arms' 180gn Gold Dot HP @ 1150fps/528fpe; * Winchester's 175gn STHP which is doing a real-world velocity of 1200fps/559fpe. If you can still find it, I always liked ProLoad's 180gn Gold Dot @ 1200fps/575fpe. Another alternative JHP load in the 10mm's mid-range is PMC's 170gn JHP @ 1200fps/543fpe. If you're looking for something a bit heavier than 180gns, you can always try Hornady's factory 200gn 10mm XTP @ 1050fps/490fpe. It's in the low mid-range, but it's certainly accurate and controllable. ILikeFtLbs 04-01-2006, 14:35 Silvertips averaged 1280 out of my stock Glock, and 1320 out of my brother's with a 6 inch barrel. Velocity was measured about 5 ft. from the barrel with his chrono (I have no idea what model, but it has 2 measuring points). agtman 04-01-2006, 18:38 ILikeFtLbs: The "real world" velocity of 1200fps was in reference to recent chrono data posted here on current lots of STHPs from the G20's 4.6" tube. Some velocity readings are as low as 1150fps. Some run about 1225fps. Winchester's "box-flap" velocity for the STHPs is "1290fps," which is supposedly produced by a 5.5" secret squirrel test barrel. How Winchester gets "1290fps" from a 5.5" barrel when 10Ringers only get 1150-1225fps from a G20 or a 5" Delta is one of life's unexplained mysteries, unless you factor-in marketing B.S. On the other hand, if the STHPs are now really closer to the advertised "1290fps" from a G20, then that's great. :)  ILikeFtLbs 04-01-2006, 19:47 I didn't mean to say you were wrong. Train with the TMJ, carry the GDHP - close your eyes when loading a magazine with a mix of the two, and see if you can tell the difference when firing. hodgeman 04-06-2006, 04:29 Originally posted by agtman ILikeFtLbs: How Winchester gets "1290fps" from a 5.5" barrel when 10Ringers only get 1150-1225fps from a G20 or a 5" Delta is one of life's unexplained mysteries, unless you factor-in marketing B.S. I know this one too well. I've yet to see a lot of Winchesters stuff that meets boxflap velocity. Anybody remember the .264 or the .458- there was certainly a whole lot of blue sky in those early numbers... Chronographs should make the ammo industry start telling the truth. kn38ms 04-06-2006, 05:26 Originally posted by frank4570 http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_25&products_id=33 If this is the load you are talking about it is a full metal jacket bullet. Not my first choice for a carry round. You are correct sir. Forgot it was FMJ :clown: Mwinter 04-06-2006, 07:31 Federal's discontinued 190gr JHP FBI ('x') load is another good performer at the lower of the 10mm range. You get a heavier bullet and a little more velocity (1050-1100 usually) than a 40SW, and mine wasn't that pricey. I've seen it run about 16" in bare gel with good expansion and weight retention; it's definitely spec'd like most LE-driven rounds (emphasis on penetration and barrier performance). I bought mine in quantity from ammoman; no longer available there unfortunately. Be aware that most 10mm loads are truncated-cone profile, and designed with modern DA autos in mind. 2 out of 3 of my Colt Deltas won't feed Gold Dot, HydraShok, Talon, Hi-Shok, the FBI load, or anything that isn't verrrry round in profile (STHP, XTP). vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
