I'm looking for a quality rail system that will allow me to use the sights I plan to buy on my AK. I plan to buy an EOTech for my AR, but I want to have a picatinny rail system on my AK and some of my other weapons so I can use this and other sights interchangably. The particular system that has caught my eye is the UltiMAK M1-B AK47 Scout Mount http://www.makosecurity.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=UTMK-M1B&Category_Code=IRS Do any of you have experience with this rail system? Is it high quality... easy to mount and take down, not hinder cleaning, attaches securely, etc.? My rifle is an Arsenal Sam 7 carbine. I did not get the model with the scope mount. I've considered buying the side scope mount that Arsenal of Bulgaria uses and putting it on my rifle to go with a more conventional AK scope mount. Which method is best?

The Ultimak is good. I've never heard anybody say anything bad about them!

I have one on my AK and it's very solid once you tight those two clamps on to the barrel, however, you might have to use a dremal tool to file some wood off the lower hand guard to accommadate the clamps.
I just put a side rail on my Arsenal SAM 5 and have a PK-AS-S scope installed. It has a black dot with the power off, and a multilevel brightness control on the red dot with power on. It is offset slightly to the left leaving your iron sight open, and sits lower than one mounted directly over the barrel. Tantal also sells a side rail mount that will accept scope rings if you want to use your own scope.Either one can be removed and reinstalled without losing your zero. Check out the MTK 01 side rail with shoulder screws, and good installation instructions a little down the page. See: http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bstmounts.html

I have one of these on order:

Should be here any day now... can't wait!
On your site mine is the one on the left, and is about 2 1/4 CL to CL also. The one on the right is mounted in the center above the barrel, and is the higher one I was talking about. One advantage of the left of center mount is that if you aim with your left eye, you can shoot from either shoulder with a good cheek weld on the stock. But shoot with right eye, shoot right hand only.
Hey TAT2,
How does your mount fasten to the rifle receiver?
it replaces the flip up portion of the rear sight, and can be used as an iron sight itself if your scope breaks down in the field. Of all the scope mounts I looked at i liked that configuration best because it seemed to position the scope right where I'd want it and it doesn't come off during breakdown like a receiver cover or gas tube cover mount would. Should mean it holds a zero better. Then again, I don't actually have it yet, it may be a turd. But rest assured, I will report on it when I've installed and tested it....

OptiMak has been the best by far of all the systems I've tried. I back the red dot sight with a Mojo peepsight. It co-witnesses perfect. Really makes a difference in ease of shooting and accuracy. The crappy rear sight has always been a big limiting factor in AK's accuracy.
i just got a quick-release side-mount rail that rides pretty low. works great with my red-dot mounted all the way forward. a guy at a local shop told me to look for the ones made in Belarus, which i found online at FreedomOptics.com (http://www.freedomoptics.com/Comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=141). I paid with PayPal ($44.95 + shipping) and the part was delivered to me (in Florida) in just a few days. It was a tight fit initially, so I had to tap it on with a mallet the first time, but now it slides on and off easily and quickly. holds zero even after unmounting and remounting with the quick-release.
