Greetings.

I am usually in the 10-Ring, but am now considering adding a shotgun to the family and would appreciate advice.

I want a 12 ga. Remington 870 with Black synthetic stock for home defense. I have viewed a few law enforcement models on Remington's website, but it seems when I find the one I want, I can't find a retailer such as Dick's sporting goods who has it in their catalog. If it is not in their catalog it seems they are not much interested in finding one.

Other than mentioned above; a few hot-buttons for me are high capacity i.e. 7 shot capacity or more if possible. 3 inch chamber minimum, A tactical light, or the ease of adding one later, possibly a hybrid stock/pistol grip. Not sure if thats what you guys call it but you know what I mean. A shoulder stock and a vertical grip near the trigger housing.

Yeah, I am not up on the latest with shotguns, thats why I am here asking you guys.

Other words, a very effective defense 12 gauge that won't break the bank account.

All suggestions welcome.

I would look at a different store and buy what you want, not what Dick's thinks that you need. Don't rule out Mossberg shotguns. They are like Timex watches.tom.

Glockman,

Rem 870 is a good choice.

Go to Gunbroker.com and you can shop till you drop.

Some of the other popular pump models are the Mossberg 590 or the 500 cruiser/persuader. Winchester 1200/1300 defenders. Benelli makes a Nova home defense style.

For Autoloaders you can get a Rem 1000 Tactical or 11-87 Police, Winchester X2 Practical, Benelli M1 Super 90 Combat.

For cost though the Pumps are going to be the cheapest. Another place to go is to www.ar15.com and go to the equipment exchange button and then down to rifles/shotguns. You will see the pumps come through there quite a bit.

Hope it helps.

What you are describing is the Scattergun Technologies (Wilson Combat) Standard model.

It's a Rem 870 with a blk. synthetic Speed-Feed buttstock (holds extra shells), a side-saddle (more extra shells), extended magazine tube, ghost ring sights (tritium night sights optional), a Sure-Fire integral flashlight forend, extra-large safety button, and bright green magazine follower. All metal parts are finished in olive drab. They do an action/trigger job which makes the action VERY slick, without creating looseness, and gives a 3.5-lb (or so) trigger. Overall, a very good shotgun set-up, although for the price, they could have had the bore re-choked for more ideal buckshot patterning. And that brings up the only issue with this gun: price. It's pretty expensive for a pump-gun. Around $1000+(US)...

Let's see here:

Rem. 870 Police Magnum (built with heavier springs and a steel trigger housing, instead of the plastic one on the commercial model).

Speed-Feed III Pistol-Grip buttstock = $107.
Vang-Comp modify the factory barrel = $240.
Sure-Fire flashlight forend (black) = $235.
Side-Saddle (6-shot) = $35.
Ghost-Ring Sights (Wilson) = $140.
large safety button = $(Free - came on my 870P)
Orange magazine follower = $(Free - this also came on my 870P)
Re-finish ~ $100.

Hmmm... Total of about $850 plus the cost of the 870P (which I got from a retired officer for $250). So, I can put my own together for about the same price as Wilson, but I also get the Vang-Comp system barrel... Something to think about...

Don't look for too many fancy features on a defense (or tactical) shotgun. Remington 870 Police Magnum is an excellent choice. Great price and durability and reliability.

Get a model with rifle sight or ghost ring sight. If you opt for other options, get a forend with flashlight attachment. That is really all you need for your home defense shotgun. This is the exact configuration for most police officers and federal agents.
