I went shooting yesterday with my G17. I've had her now for 5-6 years, and I've put at least 5,000 rounds through her.
At home, I got an itch to do a really thorough cleaning. I decided to take my G17 completely apart (my first time). I was actually just going to do the slide, but taking it apart was extremely easy. I used various internet sites, that I found here on GT, as guides. Putting the top back together was easy too.
Detail stripping the slide was so easy that I figured I ought to do the receiver as well. Taking the receiver apart wasn't too difficult. However, putting the receiver back together proved to be quite the pain for me. It was pretty frustrating. I managed to do it, though.
I wanted to start a new thread out of shear pride. It passed all safety/function tests when I had her back together.
BTW, I can't believe how much crude was in the tight places. I take immaculate care of my weapons. My lady friend makes fun of me for the time I spend on maintaining my weapons. I learned that you can only clean so much with basic field stripping. After cleaning every, EVERY nick-and-cranny the gun felt much smoother. I swear the trigger feels better. Also, it rattles more now. I guess the small parts aren't bound by crude any longer.
I feel much closer to my Glock now, and I'm even more impressed with its reliability. It has never jammed on me, even with all that crude filling it up.
