A couple neat-ideas from LA... (Who says big depts. are stuck in tradition and can't be innovative??)

I like that rear-facing tailboard compartment. Think they keep their Hydrant tools in a bag in there?

Here's a Beverly Hills Engine:

I like the side compartments on the driver's side better at the rear than the LA engine... Seems like they wasted some space at the top with those compartments on the LA version, whereas the Bev.Hills has a single, full-height compartment at the back.

Anyone have an opinion on the new Pierce "Ladder-Gantry" system?

I thought it looked like it required too much space at the rear of then engine (considering how close they often park at a scene), but then I watched the video on their website and realized it lowers at an angle, requiring much less room than, say, Ferrera's throug-the-tank ladder system...

I hate to break it to you, but I think that those are Pierce designs, not the departments. Our newest Engine, made in 2003 or 2004, and our Truck, made on '02, have the full height compartments and the engine has the rear facing compartment. The porta-tank goes in our rear compartment.

They are nice looking rigs though!

Wow... Didn't know they were stock designs... For a company like Pierce, who is super-marketing-oriented, I'm surprised they didn't come up with a catchy name for the rear-facing compartments and splash it all over their website!

(Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Pierce, but I'm starting to see where they're getting a little too big for their britches, so to speak.)

Anyway, thanks for the head's up. I didn't know those were stock designs... Seems like the perfect place for the Hydrant gear...

The Ferrara though the tank deal was neat in theory, but SUCKED in reality. The hose bed became a Mount Everest hike for deploy or reload, FF safety issue, and the 5" hose would just randomly deploy going down the road until a custom spoiler was made. We just sold that Ferrara and the remaining 4 are for sale still I believe. We had a bad experience with being the guinnea pig (in my opinion) on their Inferno model. We are back to Pierce now.

This is our newest Engine. It also doubles as a tanker for the rural calls. The compartment in the back runs almost full length of the box, and our porta-tank fits perfectly in there.

We used to let the hydrant bag dangle off the bar in the back, but Pierce said that much weight might break the mounts. Now we just have the hydrant wrench on the hose with the adapter, and most of us know what other equipment we will need for certain hydrants and grab it out of the compartment. Sounds like a pain, but it works quite well!

Yeah, it's interesting all of the ideas out there for alternate ladder carrying. Seems a lot of it is a solution looking for a problem... It's hard to argue with the traditional position (officer's side, above the rear fender and compartments), because it is easy to get to, requires no large amount of space to the side of the truck (like hydraulic or electric racks that deploy to the side), or a lot of space between the back of the truck and another truck pulling up behind it (as the Ferrera and Pierce designs) or a smaller water tank (like the Ferrera). And all of those complications for what? A couple extra compartments on the officer's side of the truck! Unless you're trying to build a really compact Rescue-Engine, I just don't see the need for it...

That's one BIG Tanker-Pumper, bud! How big is the tank? (I'm guessing 2500 or 3000 gallons?) Got a pic of the Officer's side? That thing looks like it could handle anything...

I don't have a pic on my computer, but I think we do at the station. I'll find it when I go up tonight.

If I remember correct, it is a 2000 tank. The amazing thing is, it has the same turning radius as our single axle truck, and it rides just a bit better than the truck.
