Hi,that's muzzle brake/comp you are looking for and not the flash hider,in that case, I have a AK74 type on mine and it works very nicely,it expands the burned gas in multiple direction and it's fairly inexpensive.
Second the AK74 style. I have a bastardized AK74 break on my Vepr--no muzzle climb, and recoil is greatly reduced. It is not a flash-hider. Russians call them "compensators"--compensate for the muzzle climb.

Are you sure you want a brake? I think I'd prefer a flash hider. SEI makes their Vortex for the AK:

On a similar note, does anyone have any experience with the Krink brake? How does it compare with the 74-style in both recoil compensation and flash surpression?

does this flash suppressor also work as a brake/comp?

No, it is not a compensator. It is only a flash hider. Do you find the 7.62 combloc to have excessive recoil?

I'd go with a flash hider over a muzzle brake too. Although, if you can get a hybrid compensator/flash hider, that's not a bad idea.

For intermeriate calibers, with mild recoil, a compesator is unnecessary. Further, any device that claims to do both is inadequate at one or the other (probably both). Even for full-grown rifle callibers, short of the .50 BMG, a flash hider is more useful than a compensator on any weapon, excepting maybe strict competition.
Again, SEI makes a real-deal Vortex (they invented the thing) for the Kalashnikov.
Has anyone ever tried the inexpensive birdcage suppressors? I see them for around $10 from time to time.

Well, I got a surprise for you. You're not going to believe this, but I disagree with you.
I know, it's a shocker. :)
I wouldn't call them unnecessary. I just wouldn't call them a priority either though.
A flash hider IS a priority. Even if it's a plain A1/A2 birdcage flash hider/suppressor, which aren't all that bad.
The Phantom for instance, is one of the best flash hiders out there (and it was designed specifically for the task). It's not an "excellent" compensator, although it does act as one, and I like it a lot.
Unfortunately, I do not believe the phantom is available for AK's, otherwise that would be my recommendation.
On a side note, I was somewhat agreeing with you in the first place... That is, that a flash hider is preferable to a muzzle brake on a military style battle/assault rifle.
