My friend has a big machine shop, so I have access to tools.I have a tanfoglio witness in wonderfinish. I understand this finish is the same as what glocks have. The sight on the witness is part of the slide. It is a bit too thick and shiny silver color. I would like to machine a slot to put on a different sight. My friend and I were shooting the other day and he had a glock with one of the figer optic front sights and in the grey overcast snowy day it made all the difference in the world. So if I can do this, what would be the best type of slot to put in? One for glocks or 1911s or what?
Thanks.
If you do it, I imagine the easiest one to cut, and the one for which the widest variety of front sights is available, would be a 1911 style dovetail. You can get the proper cutter from Brownell's. I've never done it, but I understand it involves milling 2 slots, one with a straight cutter to remove metal, followed by the wider dovetail cutter to shape the slot.
I imagine the hard part would be setting it up for exactly the right depth of cut. You would only get one shot. Because the sides of the slot are angled, either too deep or too shallow ruins it. You might be able to correct a very tiny mistake with an adjustable rear sight, but adjustable sights on handguns suck.
You know, come to think of it, maybe the Glock one would be easier.
