View Full Version : range-finder on Simonov reticle
i have a question regarding Simonov reticles. i'm assuming for the 400-meter range-finder scale to be accurate, the reticle in a fixed 8X power scope would appear twice as big (as a percentage of the total field of view) compared to the reticle in a 4X power scope. is that right? i'm guessing the same would be true for the 1000-meter Dragonov reticle.
on a zoom scope, how does this work? is the reticle pretty much calibrated for a particular power of magnification? and the shooter is left to "fudge" the range-finder when zooming in or out?
Recticle is placed in the second plane of view, after the image is magnified, so the size stays the same, regardless of magnification. BTW what is Simonov recticle??? Do you mean inverted chevron, such in PSO series?

no, i'm not referring to the chevrons. i'm referring to the range-finder. on the simonov reticle, you put a 1-meter tall target (like a human in a crouched position) on the range-finder with feet on the bottom line. where the top of the 1-meter target hits the upper curve tells you have many 100s of meters away the target is. works out to 400 meters. on the dragonov, the top curve is for a 2-meter tall target (standing human). works out to 1000 meters.
the chevrons on the simonov, btw, aren't arbitrary. it's specific to 7.62x39mm ammo (i think) at 100, 200, 300 meters. on the dragonov reticle (with multiple chevrons), it's 1000, 1100, 1200 meters and specific to 7.62x59mm ammo (i think).
so logically, it would seem to me, that the reticle can't be the same size for different power scopes or the range-finder would be broken, unless they resize the range finder and move the chevrons. does anybody know if this is, indeed, the case?

Almost right except the Dragunov is chambered for the 7.62x54 cartridge.

ah, right.
any clue as to whether the range finder is, in fact, scaled to the particular magnification power of the scope?
