I did a search for this and couldn't find anything. I apologize in advance if it has been discussed here before. Why isn't the AK47 on the curio and relics list? When, if ever will it be available as a C&R?

It's made after 1945 (the whole "47" part of AK47 you know).

So eventually it will be on the list?
Per ATF rules:
a) Firearms which were manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas thereof;
(b) Firearms which are certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; and
(c) Any other firearms which derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or because of their association with some historical figure, period, or event. Proof of qualification of a particular firearm under this category may be established by evidence of present value and evidence that like firearms are not available except as collector's items, or that the value of like firearms available in ordinary commercial channels is substantially less.
So once the early AK47s become 50 years or older, they are automatically C&R.
Otherwise the AK47 will have to be certified by the ATF as have a "collectors value". In that case, the gun doesn't have to be 50 years or older.

A lot of Ak's you can buy now are new manufacture so I don't see those becoming C&R.

You're right, I doubt the ATF will ever annouce that all AK47s are C&R. However, the do on occassion make certain models or years of manufacture C&R.

Never say never! Once the semi-auto are 50 years old you're golden! When were the first semi-autos manufactured, in the 80's? Only another 20 years or so to wait!
