View Full Version : LED lights
I was wanting to get a bright led flashlight reasonably priced for use as a weapon light for my ar15. I've looked at a few and can't seem to make up my mind. The surefire's are to expensive for my uses. I'm just wanting a decent light for use arond my home, that wont hurt my pocketbook. I'm leaning twoard the streamlight scorpion led or something else similar around that price range. Is 42 lumens bright? I'm also wanting one that will project a white light

42 true lumens, meaning actual measured output rather than speculative output, is quite a decent amount of light. It will be very good for navigation and target identification but may be lacking in blinding ability.
I have a Digilight LXK-53B on my AK47 and using a home made integrating device I measured it to be 58* lumens out the front, even though the LED (Lumileds LuxeonIII TW0J) is rated at around 80. Streamlight seems pretty honest about their lumen ratings compared to most other companies so you shouldnt get burned going by their lumen numbers, and the same goes for Surefire.
Another light, a Streamlight ProPolymer Luxeon 4AA, rated 40 lumens, tested to be 42*
The Inova T3 is a great option in my opinion. It throws a great wide spot of light and has a nice switch. Output isn't near their rated lumens, coming in more around 50-55 but still very bright. I often recomend this light as an inexpensive weapon mounted option. Tape switches arent available that I know of, so mount it where it can be thumb activated. Runtime often exceeds 2 hours of fully regulated light using standard lithium batteries, which is more than enough for most applications, and is double that of pretty much any incandescent weapon light.
