I'm selling my sw99 and was going to buy a SA 1911 but I'm really thinking about building an idpa legal race gun. I'm thinking a 17 will work but I was looking for some experienced advice. Thanks in advance.:)
I've seen more open G17's then any other model.

Most of the IDPA "race guns" (which aren't very racy compared with IPSC) are G34s and G35s (If you handload to make up the light .40s that some say have less felt recoil than 9mm.)
As Jeff Cooper says, "sights you can see and a trigger you can control" are the main things you need to do well. The few other things you can reasonably do to a Glock, like grip reduction/reshaping and a mag well funnel that will still fit The Box, will move you from SSP to ESP.
I know a FEW people who prefer a G17 (or 22) because they like the balance. Friend of mine won Expert and got promoted to Master at the state shoot with a G22 and nothing but some trigger polishing and a fibre optic front sight. Another of our better shooters uses a G17 with the grip reworked for ESP. But they are in the minority, see above.

That works for me because I won't be putting a ton of money into it, just enough to make it a little faster. I shot an idpa yesterday with my 21 and I love the gun but was thinking about dropping down to a 17 or a 17c to speed up my time.

If you choose the 17C you will have to put a non ported barrel in it to compete in IDPA.You would also be limited to open class in USPSA with the ported barrel.I shoot a 35 downloaded to 135 pf in SSP and ESP I just put a JP magwell on when I shoot ESP.Hope you find something that is right for you.Ken

Thanks I didn't know that, there is a gun club that has idpa every month so I think I'll stick with the non ported model. I guess I could just buy a c model and get a stock 17 barrel but we'll see. Also can you recomend any light factory loads for my .45? I don't reload yet and am not sure I want to get into all that yet and don't know when I will get my nine. thanks in advance
