View Full Version : Your russian M44 experience?
I sold an unfired M44 and I kicked myself for quite a while but I just put one on layaway today. I think the M44 is the shortened version of the mosin nagant, is that true? How many rounds through your, reliability, durability, accuracy, anything info on this model would be appreciated.
The M44 is indeed a shortened 91/30 with an attached folding bayonet. Everything around the rear sight and back is the same between the two.
All Mosins are built like tanks - no worries about reliability or durability. Almost all surplus ammo is corrosive, which isn't a big deal provided you clean it well after shooting (I use a few patches with Windex immediately after I'm done, then clean normally when I get home).
Ton of info here --> http://7.62x54r.net/
ive got 4 m44's
a 1946 russian, (my first milsurp)
an unissued 1945 russian
an unissued 1955 romanian
and a 1945 hex receiver russian
I shoot em all, between them and the other mosins and my svt-40, ive prolly put around 5k rds of 7.62x54r downrange.
ive sold hundreds of m44's and m38's in my PT gun shop job. its very rare to see a problem with them.
the only complaints i hear is that the recoil is stout and every now and then a bolt sticks. personally i like the recoil. ive shot 250+ rds in a day with no probs. usually the bolts stick with the lacquered steel cases like czech surplus, and older wolf (pre polymer coating) but there is an easy fix for sticking mosin bolts of all types here: http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2005/eliminatesbs/index.asp
ocasionally (read only about 5 out of several hundred) do the extractors break. never had it personally happen to me, but i have seen it on a few of the rougher mosins we get. it takes less than $10 in parts and less than 5 min to change one, but again, its not a very common occurrance.

Ive got a 46 russian with probably about a 1000 through it in two months. Absolutley no complaints. The accuracy continues to get better as i get more comfortable with the rifle. I think the recoil is less than a .30-06. Nothing but respect for these rifles...
