View Full Version : sks jammed
There are so many different gun sub groups on this baord that i hope this is the right place to ask.
I was shooting my yugo sks today and on the last round the trigger fired but did not fire the round. So i had a round chammbered but it would not fire. I then tried to pull the bolt carrier back and it wont budge. It will move maybe a 1/4" back but thats it. So i took the cover off and the recoil spring and it still would not budge. I then take the trigger group out but cant get the fixed magazine out. When i pull the bolt carrier back the fireing block moves forward in the opposite direction. Any ideas on how to get the round out and my sks back to functioning?

Do you have a cleaning rod or something??
yes i do. And i dont feel real comfortable sticking a cleaning rod down the barrel with a cartridge lodged in the chamber, the fireing pin is stuck right behind the cartridge. This isnt a safe idea is it??

Oh, I somehow thought you got the bolt carrier out, sorry.... that was bad advice... :shy: PLEASE DON'T DO WHAT I SAID WITHOUT REMOVING THE BOLT AND BOLT CARRIER!
(boy I feel stupid, I could have gotten you hurt if you weren't more aware.... SORRY!)
How hard have you pulled back on the bolt carrier??
My first instinct would be to remove that. Then, if the cartridge won't come out, after that, do the cleaning rod.
i've given it a good pull as well as a friend of mine. i havent used a hammer on it yet. if i cant get the bolt carrier out i have no clue how to proced from there. I'm thinking that maybe the extractor is hung up on something.

If you use a hammer use some clothe or something to keep from marring up the bolt handle. I would just keep messing with it.

Perhaps a rubber malet would do a better job then a regular ol' claw or ball pine hammer.

Good point.
Keep us updated.
Update: Well i got a hammer and took a towel and wrapped it around the charging handle of the bolt carrier. I gave it a tap with a hammer (just a light tap) and it came out. Their was a cartridge in the chamber but it was empty (already fired). I wasnt expecting that. What i think happened was it was the last round in my magazine and didnt eject properly. The bolt stayed open because it had fired the last round. Seeing that a round was still in the magazine and the bolt open, i thought that i just had a failure to feed. So i pulled the bolt back and rechambered the already used round and this caused it to lock up some how.

Ok, REALLY IMPORTANT: check your barrel for obstructions before you fire it again. If you had a squib (low power round, usually caused by no powder in the case), then you could have a bullet stuck in the barrel. Firing a round with a bullet stuck halfway through the barrel would be a BAD THING.
Hopefully it's not the case. If it is, you should be able to hammer the bullet out with a strong wooden dowel (hammer from the chamber towards the muzzle).

Good thinking cynical
Were you firing laquer coated ammo? sometime when it gets hot it will not eject. Inspect entire weapon before firing. Important caution, if you take the bolt apart make sure you re-install firing pin correctly, if installed backwards could cause a slam fire. My golden rule after ddoing any work or cleaning an SKS load only two rounds and always point muzzle in safe direction.
If any semiauto rifle refuses to eject, all you need to do is put rearward pressure on the bolt carrier handle and thump the buttplate on the ground with authority.
I've never seen this fail. Momentum, it would seem, Is Our Friend.
I suggest you clean your chamber out before you go shooting again to get any lacquer or other detritus out of it before its next range trip.
