View Full Version : 870 Express rust issues?

I have heard an occasional comment about rust issues with an 870 Express, yet the ones we use at work are VERY well-used, and they still function perfectly. And even though the finish is worn almost completely off most of 'em, I have never seen any signs of rust. They are outside in the weather, rain or shine. I'm getting ready to buy one more personal riot gun which will be out in the weather occasionally. What say ye about the finish on the current production Express models? Are they excessively prone to rust if exposed to moisture?

Thanks,

Vig

They may be more susceptible to rust than a police model 870, but I've had my 870 express for 6 years and haven't had any issues as of yet.

When I had mine, I wiped it down with a Sentry Solutions Tuf-Cloth after every range trip/use/whatever.

One time, standing around carrying it with hand around the receiver on a very hot day, I put it away without wipedown (forgot).

Next morning I had a light-rust handprint around the gun. Got it all off, but I never EVER missed a Tufcloth wipedown after that till i sold it to a friend.

Spend the little extra, get the Police with parkerization.

I shoot my 870's rain or shine. I have not had any issues with rust on the Express models. I am one of those weird folks who likes to clean guns though and my 870's get cleaned with CLP after every trip.
I've been shooting my '55 WM more often of late but I did just pull all the SG's out for a look-over and wipe-down and no problems.
I do recall a fellow on GT (I think) who lived in a humid climate and he complained about rust all the time.
The finish on my Express guns does not seem as powdery or light as the newer ones but that could be from the constant shooting and cleaning and shooting and cleaning etc....
If you tend to neglect your guns, get the best finish you can afford, park'd or even plated maybe.

Well, my Glocks spoil me with their rust resistant finishes. I have three black painted 870's.

Yep, they will rust if neglected. Not badly, compared to blued guns, but will happen. I am currently not living near salt water, but think that sweat from palm can cause rust.

Over all, not a big problem. Shoot. Wipe down. Enjoy.
