I tried this in the gunsmith forum with no responses so I'll see if you guys & gals can shed some light.
Berreta 96 to 9mm?
I tried a couple of searches but didn't have any luck so here goes.
What is needed to run 9mm ammo in a .40S&W 96 pistol? I figure bbl and mags but don't have any hands on or secondhand knowledge of such a project.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Try going to Beretta's website, and downloading the manual for each gun (92 & 96). Scroll to the last page, or wherever it is they show the exploded view of the gun with part names, and look for whatever's different.
I'd guess barrel, mags, recoil spring, maybe ejector.

Barrel is a must of course. The slide is recommended since the extractor is radioused different for 40 and 9.Then mags are a so-so.If you're just gonna be using it for occasional plinking and putting holes in paper you can use the 40 mags with 9mm's in it.The feed lips are a smidge wider on the 40 mags so you might have a mis-feed every once in a while.
Hint(a 10rd 40 mag with a 9mm follower will hold 14 9mm's) ;)
If you're buying all that stuff, you might want to simply shop for an entire top end/upper in 9mm. Beretta sold conversion/swap kits, and also a package that came with both calibers. The last one I saw FS in Shotgun News was about $200...not bad.
I swapped uppers between my 96D and my 92d Brigadier a few times....it worked ok, but there were a few hiccups.
I do know that you'll probably need an extractor or at least some work on the extractor. At my first LE job most of us were issued 40cal Berettas....one day at the range the gal next to me kept futzing with her gun and it was making an odd noise when it fired. I thought "jeez this idiot put the wrong rounds in the pistol". I was about to call a ceasefire when I was graced by one of our 'expert' SWAT guys coming over and doing tap-rack-bang a couple times before finally removing the mag and finding out she'd loaded up with 9mm.
If memory serves, the ramp/cutout on the frame is different between the 40 and 9 Berettas...I've owned both but it's been a few years.

As of now,Beretta is making both 92 and 96's with the wider 40cal feed ramp/notch.Yes before the cut-outs were narrower on the 92's.

I have a 96 Inox and added a Bar-Sto 9mm barrel and some 9mm mags. Works perfectly - that's all you need, a barrel and mags!
