I see where Remington offers a tactical 870 with Knoxx Spec-Ops stock and +2 ext, in OD green. Anyone tried this model?
;)
I have a 2005 870 Tactical Green Giant. Should be the same as the 2006 ones except that it came with a Speed Feed IV stock while the newer ones have the Knoxx stocks.
I have made a few modification to my 870 but would not have purchased it in the first place if I didn't like it.
While a great many will undoubtedly disagree with me, I do not like the Knoxx stocks and much prefer the Speed Feed IV-s that is on my 870. Nonetheless, Knoxx stocks are all the rage these days and I understand why Remington switched suppliers.

+1. You will find no disagreement here. I think the Konox stocks are a gimmick, and they will pass, like any fad.

Just wondering, what don't ya'll like about the Knoxx? Does the recoil reduction have any merit?
My LEO grandson is looking for a entry gun and is looking at this model.
Thanks,
;)
my brother bought this exact shotgun. He had to qualify with it so i went with him and i got to shoot it aswell. It is amazing! You do not feel any kick what so ever. I do recomend it!!!

Concur. My wood-stocked 870 with a backbored barrel, lengthened forcing cone, Pachmayr pad and LE loads shoots like a dream.

Try with slugs and 00 bucks. I am sure there will be some "kick" to these ammos. Some well designed semi's do take up a good portion of recoil, but 870 give the shooter full brunt. Recoil pads can only do so much.

I know guys who've shot full power slugs or magnums with the Knoxx and said it felt like a 5.56mm (in an 870).
I did not notice a huge difference with the birdshot, but when I went to slugs there was a MAJOR recoil reduction with the Knoxx. I was shooting 2 identical shotguns side by side for the test. One with the speedfeed SF-V 13" LOP pistol grip and the other with the Knoxx Spec-Ops. Knoxx is a nice setup, but pricey.

I had one of the very first models of the comp stock, I didn't care for it. I felt a little reduction in recoil, but I couldn't get used to my hand moving back to my face, it was like your LOP got shortened 3 inches in a millisecond.

I've shot an 870 with the R3 pad and mine with the SpecOps stock using the same ammo(TAP and Hornady SST slugs) and there is a noticable difference. You can always get lower recoil ammo use a different stance, etc. but if you do that in conjuction with the stock it will be that much better.

It's not a "recoil pad" -- I have the Comp-Stock, which has only one of the two absorbtion devices in the Spec-Ops, and it's remarkable. When I put on the ghost ring I shot a 25-box each of Brenneke slugs and 12-pellet 00 buck off the bench, then realized walking to car that I couldn't tell I had shot anything at all. Anything that allows me to shoot more pellets with greater comfort, which also translates to longer practice sessions and better skills, has value. It's not about how much manly recoil we can handle.
Nobody builds artillery pieces that don't take advantage of the mass of the barrel working against a resistance device to absorb the recoil without pounding the mount like a hammer -- so why is holding a shotgun rigidly to your shoulder such an great concept?
Recoil reduction is significant with the SpecOps. Shooting slugs and 00 buck feels like shooting birdshots with the regular stock. The only complain I have is the stock keeps hitting me in the cheek. Pressing your cheek firmly against the stock pad will solve that problem.
I had looked into the 870 Tactical. I ended up buying a 870 Express Magnum HD (with 18" brl, and +3 ext.) for $220, and the Knoxx Specops from Knoxx for $120 (could have saved $10 buying from islandtactical).
So, for $340 I was able to get the same gun as the 870 Tactical but in all black (I never liked the contrasting OD anyway). They wanted $500 for the 870 Tactical loacally. $160 seems a little pricey for some green paint.

The tactical probably has a much tougher finish, the 870 Express models tend to be rust magnets (from my own experience with that exact same model) unless you're careful.
From the reviews of the 870 Tactical I have seen, the green finish is just painted on... Any first hand experiance with the 870 Tactical out there??

I agree completely. I have the 18" with the 2 shot extension and Knoxx Spec-Ops stock. Between the shorter length of pull and the recoil reduction, the comfort level has improved dramatically for me.
I took a shotgun instructor course at the state police academy last winter, and I was firing 200-300 rounds per day through Mossberg 590's for three days. It was okay, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sore at the end of every day and really sore by the end of the class. I fired the same number of rounds through my 870 with the Knoxx stock over a weekend about a month later, and it was night and day. The Knoxx stock has some downsides also, but it really does take the sting out of even the hottest magnum loads.
To the original poster, buy that shotgun. That is exactly what I have, and I love it. It's much more versatile than a semi-auto, and much more comfortable than a pump action without a Knoxx stock. You really get the best of both, plus a stock that can be adjusted to fit anyone wearing any clothing and gear.
