I was disassembling it and that silver piece of spring steel on the left receiver wall that is staked on popped out and wouldnt let the bolt go forward. The end of it broke off and that's why it was sticking up. I just pulled the whole thing off and now it cycles fine. My question is; What is that silver piece of steel, and do I need it?

By "it cycles fine" do you mean that you can more the forend back and forth and the action will open and close? Or, do you mean that you can chamber a round, load rounds into the magazine and either by firing or by using the action release button, you can extract and eject rounds from the chamber and load rounds from the magazine?

The reason I ask is that I suspect the part that you broke is the ejector or ejector spring. Breaking the ejector or its spring would make it difficult to eject an extracted round.

In any event, whatever the broken part, you should take it to a competant gunsmith for inspection and repair.

Sounds like one of the shell stops.

Just a guess, but I'm pretty sure you need this part installed properly

Have you actually fired the 870 in this configuration??

Dont' read what Steve writes. He don't know nuttin about no scatterguns ;-P

Actually, shell stop was my second guess but the author mentioned that the part was staked. I thought ejector and spring are staked, but not the shell stops.

Thanks JMB it was the ejector. I haven't fired it in "this configuration" yet, but now when I cycle live ammo they are getting stuck. I guess I'll have to take it to a pro gunsmith. Thanks guys.

I had an 870 with no ejector and it worked fine. I do not recall how well it ejected when dry-cycling but when I took it out and shot it, it worked just fine.
I did have an ejector installed when I had the gun coated though.
I have seen other 870's, usually sub-gauge guns, that do not have ejectors and yet eject OK.
I do not recommend running without one but I have done just that with no trouble.
