Yesterday a friend and his two boys and I went to the range. They brought some ammo to shoot in my AR. I had never used this 40gr Winchester varmint stuff, so I watched carefully as the boys fired. In total out of 40 rounds, six rounds nose dived so bad in the mag that the bullets set back into to case and prevented the bolt from closing past the mag. This was a perfectly functioning 20 round mag that ran off a full load of Wolf right after this occured , just as a test.
My opinion is that this ammo had excessive taper in the cases. As you loaded a mag, you could see the front tip of the rounds progressively dip down until, with a full loading , the tip of the bullets were forced into the lip as they were pushed forward by the bolt.
This problem did not occur with the Wolf 55gr HP's or Q3131A .
It's possible that this mag just doesn't like this ammo. I did not try it in my GI mags as only 40 round was available.
I am certainly glad that I caught this problem BEFORE they fired a severely set back bullet
