Not enough information. WHAT SPORT would you like to start shooting? GSSF? IDPA? USPSA/IPSC? Cowboy Action? Bullseye?
No matter what it is, you probably don't want to start by buying a G17L - I've never seen anybody use one in any kind of match and I've never heard a competition shooter say he wanted one. There are too many better choices, just among Glocks.
If it's IDPA, you could get started with either the Glock 26 or the 37. The 37 would probably be the best. The 17L is not allowed.
If it's USPSA, definitely start with the 37.
The 17L is allowed in some divisions, I think, but isn't the best choice for any.
GSSF, start with the 37 or buy a 17. 17L would put you in competition class(you don't want to be there).
Bullseye and Cowboy? Start buying some non-Glock firearms.
If you want to buy a new Glock for matches, the G34 is very popular in IDPA and USPSA/production, but put you in "competition" class for GSSF matches.
If you really want to buy a new Glock, the good old G17 is about the most versatile competition gun for IDPA, GSSF and USPSA.

I recently moved to Reno also and was wondering what club you joined and where they shoot. Also a recommendation on a good store would be appreciated as well.
