View Full Version : Chinese 7.62X54R?
Saw a sealed, silver-colored tin at a gunshow.
Had Chinese writing on it and "7.62". Seller said it was a 550rnd tin. I didn't know whether it was any good so I didn't buy it. I got some 1983 Polish FMJ instead. (Copper case, light ball, red sealant)
So what was in that tin? I've looked around the net, but can't find it.
I have read that Chinese ammo tins had ammo. 15rnds to a pack, on brass stripper clips! I would love to have some dang stripper clips for this thing! (Technically called chargers of course)
So what did I miss out on?

Hmm. 550rnds in 15rnd packs doesn't make sense does it?
I have a bad feeling that the tin was full of 550rnds of 7.62X39 on 10rnd stripper clips and I'm an idiot for not buying it.
Or he was wrong and it really had 440rnds of 7.62X54R inside. Guess I'll never know.
Either way I should have bought it.

In my opinion the Chinese 54R is some of the best performing ammo I have had. There seems to be a few cans popping up here and there and some reports of some coming in with Albanian ammo.
The Chinese I have has a silver tip and came in a typical 440 rd can that was silver in color. I still have about 200 rds left from the late 80's and will keep it as my stash for the future.
the only chinese stuff i have ever seen that has 550 rds in it is 7.62x39. its in a rectangular galvanized can (not a spam can) with a couple chinese letters and a 7.62 stamped into the can. it was sealed up pretty good with lead/solder.
it came in 1100 rd crates. 2 tins in a wooden crate. the last crate i got, i sold the stuff for $200 a tin.
did you get the guy's card? that stuff is steel core, and its bringing a premium right now.
the last chinese 54r i had was in brass cases with lead core. pretty nice shooting stuff.
Aha!
I recall this tin having rounded edges. So that means it was 7.62X54R.
Wonder if it had chargers inside?
It did not come with an opener and he wanted $90 for the tin.
That would be $4.09 per 20. A little high unless you really want Chinese ammo.
Thanks guys!

i dont think its possible to fit 550 rds in a standard spam can. 440 barely fits in there and sometimes its REALLY tight.
im still thinkin it was 762x39
be prepared to cringe when you see the pics below cause i think you missed out on fairly cheap (by today's standards) chinese steel core.
did it look like this pic?

we also used to get it like this:

did you get his card? i would gladly pay him $100 + shipping for that stuff.
I think that was it, but the markings look a little different.
It was in rough shape. Not dented, but it had been sitting in a dirty place for awhile.
Being stupid, I got no contact info whatsoever.
