View Full Version : I need a new rear sight
I have decided to upgrade from the Glock adjustable rear sight on my G35 to a better one. What do you think is better, the Fiber Optic rear like the Dawson or a plain black? I have only used the white outline that came standard. I am already using a Hi-Viz fiber optic front. Also, how about the adjustable vs fixed rear sights. One bettter than the other for competition?
Thanks for any ideas.
Actually,Sarge,You are the only one that can answer that. If you look at 50 shooters at an IDPA or IPSC match, you will see twenty five different sight combinations.
I think a lot of it is just your personal preference and how good your eyes are. Many shooters like all black sights such as the Sevigney competition or the various Heinies. Some of those same folks add the fiber optic or night site front to the same rears I just mentioned.
I personally don't like anything on my rear sight (bars, dots, outlines etc.) as I want all my attention to focus on the front sight. If I use night sights for low light shooting I like the ones that you can barely see the dots in daylight, but that is just me.
As far as adjustable sights, I have never seen a use for them in the kind of shooting I do but maybe for Bullseye or something more precise they could be an aid. I just look at it as one more part to come loose.
If at all possible,at a match or at a range, look at as many different sight set ups to see if one really seems to work for you.
I have actually had some of my best luck with a really strange set up that works well for my older eyes. They are Suresights but I hate to even mention them as I don't know if they are ever going to be on the market again.
Good Luck with your choices.
I am with Frank. I do not want anything on the rear. I have been playing around with a modified Rescomp rear on my G35.
I like a plain rear also. I am currently using the Warren/Sevigny rear with a Dawson FO front.
Also check out the Dawson fixed rear for the glock - they're pretty nice.

I have one of the first sets from Dawson (f/o front and fixed rear) and it compares favorably with the Dawson f/o front - Heinie (plain) rear.
I prefer naked rear sights on my Glocks - even on carry guns.
Hmmm... thanks for the replies. I will look into the plain rear sights. I was leaning toward the fiber optic rear, but will take a seocnd look at the plain rear sight.

I looked at a gun with FO front and rear, it was rather over powering and would take some getting used to.
If you install the Dawson adj Glock sights you'll wind up with a very high front sight.
Here's what I did for sights on my G23 & G17:
Put on a plain black MMC rear made for the Glock and a Dawson Precision Fiber Optical front made for the Novak rear. The front sight is .160 high. I opened up the MMC rear a little with a file and Dremel.
Looks like a small combat rear sight and it's adjustable. The front sight is very low and will fit any holster
Warren/Sevigny rear with a Dawson front. Sorry about the lighting. The camera angle is off but the front sight isn't taller..

If you go with a plain black, go with the Warren/Sevigny sights. You WONT be disappointed. Great sights, I love'm and have them on all my Glocks. The night sights are good too.
I Shot has great deals on them.

I think the Warren/Sevigny sights are "okay" but the bottom edge of the rear notch, on my sample, aren't flat - it looks like cheap machine work to me. The Heinie's with a race cut are better and the Dawson fixed rear is simply the best, in my opinion.
YMMV of course.
To me a adjustable sight is a must. That way I can adjust my sights to my ammo/point of impact. I mostly shoot steel matches and being able to pick off little steel plates at a distance is a must.
I've got a great combo where my 180 grain ipsc ammo and my 140 steel ammo has the same point of aim with the way my sights are set up. I just need to change recoil springs.
Oh I'm using the Dawson fiber optic front and rears. It suited my ability level at the time. Coming from 15 years of paintball I needed something that screamed "USE THE SIGHTS!" I will say they are very fast. I've decided my next sights will be dawson all black adj rear with a CGR front. CGR offers a front that is even slimmer than the slimmest from dawson.
You can adjust fixed sights too, it just takes: a hammer, a brass drift, a file and reblackening what you filed.
You don't get to make easy adjustments if you change your loads however.
I switched from adjustable rear to a fixed rear sight because my adjustable would occasionally adjust itself and I figured it was more likely to break than a solid rear sight, after making that change I have broken two fixed rear sights :frown: but I am not planning on going back.(non Glock pistol, not that it matters)

YMMV of course. The Warren sights have a U notch by design, the Sevignys have a square notch.

Yes, you're correct. My version is the Sevigny competition sight. Sorry about not making that distinction in my previous post.
