RRA Lower Match a CMMG Upper???

Hi,

I am currently looking at building me a new Ar-15. I already have a POS! It is the rifle that makes you want a SKS or AK! I am giving the AR design another chance. All because I feel the original rifle I have is of inferior quality and therefor doesn't accuratly depict what a GOOD AR-15 is capable of. Somthing about being jamed for 30 minutes while my buddies are rattaling the range with thier ARs AND WITH THE SAME AMMO I WAS USING...says mine is a POS!

That said I am looking at building the MOST reliable Rifle I can. I have bought a RRAs Lower at a recent gunshow and have a ACE SOCOM stock that I put on it. (This build is intended to be an M-4gery.)

I am looking at CMMGs 14.5 inch barrel with the 1/7 twist (for shooting 69 and 77 grain reloads) and a perminate PHANTOM Flash Hider on the end. I will want an EoTech and a Free float rail system to mount a light and verticle grip ETC... it may have to be a little later though.

My main question is will I see color differences in a CMMG Upper and a Rock River Lower? I know that not all ARs match color wise I and want this to match if possible. I would not mind having it Duracoated but if I can save that pile of cash I would be well pleased!

Also if you have any experience with CMMG products please CHIM in! I am looking for the most reliable AR I could afford (COLTs are a little out of my budget:freak:!) it appears CMMG is them I hope.

I have a CMMG 16" midlength upper and lower, extremely pleased with it. They are teflon coated and jet black, RRA is a chalky charcoal and won't even come close. I had the upper on a RRA lower at first, then ordered a CMMG lower so it would match.

Can't go wrong with CMMG, solid stuff and great people. I would suggest the 16" midlength though. Getting a 14.5" has no advantage over a 16" and you're stuck with the hider.

You wont know unless you try. Receivers will vary in color even from batch to batch, not just manufacturer to manufacturer.

I have seen some pretty good matches from totally different companies and seen the same companies not match too well. If it's that big of a deal you could just Gun-Kote or Dura-coat your rifle.

Hey,

I wanted to thank ya’ll for the advice here! I was doing some MAJOR researching yesterday on this and found something saying that Bushmaster has the same steel as CMMG and several others and that Rock River is different than most any of them. This is really sucky as I bought that lower with the intention of putting a CMMG complete upper half on it and having a ONE heck of a good and trustworthy AR! I would get a Rock River upper but they don’t offer the twist I really want to have in my next AR. I am intending on getting some heavier bullets and hand loading them such as 77 Grainers. I intend on making this into an awesome COMBO for the woods or the city! I know I “should buy factory AMMO!” But, the reloads WILL ONLY BE USED ONCE PROVEN RELIEBLE. I can produce ammo that relieble and they will only cost me about Ľ of factory ammo. The more I load the more money I should save on the heavy bullets! I have a good bit of experience reloading so this isn’t a problem for me to get quality ammo.

Some other question…

I actually have a Bushmaster lower that the Model 1 Sales JUNK upper is currently mounted on. I guess I could always use it with a CMMG upper if it matched as it is a REALLY GOOD LOWER with a piece of junk upper on it now. That is always a good option.

Or I could always have the receiver and barrel coated OD Green or maybe even the whole rifle coated to match in some other “COOL” finish like Duracoat or Guncoat.

Or I could get a RRA Upper receiver and put a 1/7 twist barrel in it. I don’t know that this would be the cheapest thing to do but it would be a real good gun in the end.

The main thing I was wanting to build this rifle for is a Fighting Rifle and Advanced Fighting Rifle course I plan on attending in June at Tactical Response. The course requires 4,000 rounds of Rifle Ammo and 1,500 rounds of Pistol ammo in four days. So I feel that I should get something that will hold up REAL GOOD OR ELSE! I have thought about just taking my current Rifle and having a rental Sully (TR offers this to students) put on stand-by for me to use WHEN mine goes down. I do know if it didn’t quit on me I would be in complete SHOCK!

I don’t know exactly what I should do. But, the class is approaching and I have a lot of things to put money into between now so I will be spread fairly thin. GAS NEVER HELPS...BUT I'll leave that for another disscussion! So I might just be better off not buying anything new until after the class and just using what I have and a rental gun from TR while I’m there.

Thanks Again for the responses! I really appreciate getting your view on this as I have little experience in this area. I guess I should have don't all this research before getting the lower. But I knew RRA is a reputable company and that it would be quality no matter what! It just might end up OD green or something even COOLER!!!
