View Full Version : Looking to buy G20, first handgun ?'s
Greetings everyone! My name is Jason and I am located in Fargo, ND. I have been watching, reading, and learning on this site for a little bit and finally decided to take the plunge and look at getting myself a Glock. I have gone back and forth for a long LONG time, and have decided to go with the 10mm. Now let me explain my reasoning and planned uses and see if everyone agrees that this is a proper gun for myself.
I am looking to:
A) Have fun at a range and own a consistant, and accurate handgun (I understand the ammo is more expensive, and that concern isn't major for me)
B) I would like to carry it while whitetail deer hunting... I am under the impression that this gun will take down a deer at a reasonable range, however I do plan to also carry/use my 30/30
C) I plan to keep for many years, if not the life of me. Is this the right gun to START my handgun experience? I have shot thru handgun training with the local police, however using revolvers.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Jason

You just need to shoot one and see how it feels to you. If it feels right, buy it. The uses you have listed are not unreasonable.
I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

I got a 20 for my 2nd handgun, but it sounds like you have much more experience shooting than I did. Although full-house loads are plenty healthy, 10mm's are nothing to be intimidated by. I positivly LOVE mine, and like most 10mm owners, will never get rid of it.
I REALLY appreciate all the responses and help. It appears that some say don't, some say do, some say it works well for one but bad for others.... that makes this situation harder.
I originally was looking at a G19, but that isn't legal to carry at all when hunting and I love deer/furbearer hunting, and would like a new 'challenge' if you will as bowhunting is pretty boring I feel. Being the G20 is really the price effective option for a 10mm, I choose that...
Is deer hunting with the 10mm not really a realistic idea? I know it will not have kill power over ~40-50 yards, but where I hunt, I am always the guy walking the belts and occasionally I have a deer/animal get up right in front of me and would have a quality 10-30 yard shot. If this hunting idea is a joke and will be disappointing (this based upon having a comfortable control of the G20) please someone put it on the table for me. Hunting is the 100% reason that put my hands on the G20.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO! Regardless of my glock choice, I will frequent this site for long to come!

I've heard of others using a G20 to hunt dear and boar. Probably akin to bow hunting where you need to get a little closer but if you're good, no big deal right?
I still insist you need to shoot one first. I would NEVER buy a gun cold based only on info from others. You are unique with unique needs. Double Tap even puts out some good hunting ammo for the 10. Hornady does too. Rated for deer and black bear.

Alright guys,
I have gone back and forth over and over, and decided that my first handgun will be a Glock 20!:cool:  I am very excited for this purchase and the business I am purchasing it from will have it tomorrow @ 2pm! I must say I am very excited however soon to follow will be newbie questions (I will make sure to attempt first on the 'search' button, as I admin a forum for the business I manage).
First things first, where is the best deal online for range shooting ammo in the 10mm variety? Brands?
I am super excited and look forward to taking this little guy out!
Oh, btw, the owner of the shop I work for bought one yesterday amidst my excitement. G20 as well, and altho my first impression is that the G20 is damn beefy, my pinky is able to come around the bottom of the grip well.

I believe the cheapest I've found for range shooting is CCI Blazer for around $13 something for a box of 50. I just checked at MidwayUSA and they appear to be out at the moment. You may want to mix in some Hornady 200gr XTP and some Double Tap 200 gr XTP/JHP for your initial experience, just to see what it can do. If anyone knows where to get some target ammo for the 10 cheaper I'd love to know about it.

Even though I have large hands, it took me about 500rds to start getting used to it.
I love to shoot this gun.
Look at the DT practice loads @ $154/500rds.
If you are used to revolvers, the G20 will be easy on you.
My S/W 642 .38 special kicks more than full load 10mm in the G20.
As far as hunting with it goes.
If you are a responsible/realistic hunter, the 10mm is more than enough to make a kill.
Even though some are going to slam me for my next statement, all my deer hunting since I was 7 years old was done with a .22 Hornet or smaller cartridge. Yes, we were very financially poor country folk. The last deer that was taken I used a .22 short from a pistol (it was only 10 paces away). I never lost a deer and never had one run more than 40 paces from point of impact with the majority dropping within 4 - 5 paces.
So, point of my story is that if you know when to shoot and where to shoot (will only pull the trigger when you know it will be a clean/successful shot) the 10mm is more than enough.
Put a 6 inch barrel on it with improved sights and it should make a fine hunting pistol.
As far as lasting a lifetime, it's a Glock, what more needs to be said.
Hope this helps.

All of the local shops carry Ultramax reloaded ammo. Works preety good, just 1 or 2 light strikes per 50. It is "range ammo" for sure. I also shot some Miwall and had 1 LS per 500. The Miwall is new, reloadable, and good quality. It's at Outdoormarksman.com Of course anything from Double Tap is top-notch!
oh yeah, an advantage arms .22 conversion is a good idea, too. It's really helping me with my triger pull. It works GREAT and I can always afford to shoot now!

While I do enjoy shooting my glock 20, I feel the grip is just too big. I much prefer my Delta Elite.
