I just noticed that CDNN is selling HK made AR mags for $48; what gives? I know German stuff is usually reliable as hell and very well made and don't doubt these mags are any different. Does anyone here own them and if so, were they worth they extra $$?

I own 12 of them. They are by far the best ar mag i have ever used.
Some think they are not worth the price but IMO they are worth every penny.
If you buy some make sure you get the 2nd gen ones.

The HK mags have a stainless steel body. They are very well made. They make normal AR15 mags seem like airsoft toys.

Having seen them, I can say they are nice, but definately NOT WORTH the money. You can get like 5 USGI mags for that price, or lets just say 4 USGI mags with magpul followers for $48.
They are heavy as hell too. That is a big issue with me, I like a light weapon.
I say skip 'em.
I agree with Gorelicks. Get 4 USGI with magpuls, when 2 of them break... 10 years later, you'll still be 2 ahead ;)
Or if you want stainless, try a CP Stainless mag with Magpul follower for around $28. They've been getting good reviews, and are about 1/2 the price of the HK.
Seems like this horse keeps on going no matter how hard its beaten. I would say the HK mag is the finest out there but at an incredible price. That price makes it impractical for most of us who pay for our toys. I doubt it would outlast four USGI mags.
I would pass on the Cp stainless mags. They have a unique follower that is not common on any other AR mag. I like uniformity with everything that is a common component of the AR system. That said, I do have plenty of Cp mags with conventional followers. Please understand that I am not saying the stainless mag is a dog rather that I prefer a standard follower and if the Cp stainless mag had a standard follower I would probably purchase some. Cp makes an excellent magazine at a bargain price.

The mags or this topic? If it's the latter I apologize, because I did try a search in this forum using "HK magazines" as keywords. I couldn't find anything, so I posted my query.

That's it? One thread from February? Anyway, I appreciate the replies thus far and hope they keep coming.

Will a standard follower fit in there? (greenie or gen II magpul)
It's no big deal if they just shipped them with a follow of their own design... but if their mag will only accept a follower of a unique and proprietary design, well then I agree that's a downside.
They ship it with the correct follower and it works perfectly. And no, the other followers will not work reliably if installed in the Stainless magazine body. The body must be somewhat different in design. Like I said, I want mags that can have parts interchanged and function reliably and nothing else and the regular USGI body, spring and follower that Cp manufacturers needs no improvement that I desire.
Glock21 that thread from February is a good one but there are others which may take a little digging. There are excellent threads on this subject over at Arfcom also.
I'm with Gorelicks on the weight issue. I handled one last week and the things are quite robust! It appeared very well made but I'll stick with my LaBelles with orange MagPul followers. They all (10) have performed flawlessly.

I've used one, they're steel, and nice, but HEAVY. It didn't work appreciably better than the other 200 standard mags in the pile when I qualified. Didn't misfeed etc but neither did most of the others.

Like MOST HK stuff, the AR mags are very nice. Like ALL HK stuff, its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced. Very reliable, but then again, so are my $15.00 ones.
I have a bunch of the HK mags and would get more if I stumbled across a good deal. The benefit to these mags is the ability to insert a full, 30 rounds, onto a closed bolt under stress and in a hurry.
The other benefit is the floor plate design. It's designed to withstand the impact of being dropped (fully loaded) on cement without blowing apart.
If that is worth the extra money to you then go for it. I haven't tried the new steel CP mags yet but I've heard great things from several people I trust.
I agree that with prices on mags so low it's hard to justify the $50 price tag of the HKs. To each his own.

I have ONE. If they were $30 each I'd probably have 10, but their prices are insane.
Mine is good for keeping loaded and in the gun for "things that go bump in the night". If I drop my gun on the magazine I'm certain that the HK mag will keep working and not bend. While I don't plan on dropping the gun at a moment when I need it most I know it'll get banged around quite a bit in the interim.
The added cost of one HK mag is insurance that my AR will keep firing if I need it to do so. Unnecessary? Maybe, maybe not. It's cheap enough to be worth doing anyhow.
Or if you want stainless, try a CP Stainless mag with Magpul follower for around $28. CP worked with MP, but MP is not manufacturing them. The CP SS mags are now $18 ea.

When those mags come down to around $20 I'll buy some. Until then my G.I. mags with the green followers will still be working great.........

Anything from the Fatherland tends to be expensive. Try owning a German car....
Never lusted after the HKs, considering cost and general goodness of the GI mags. I like 20s anyway.
Speculating here, but I'm guessing dropping either GI or HK,loaded, on a hard surface, lips down, would leave you screwed. I'd rather trash a $15 mag...I'm not volunteering to do the empirical research.;)

It is possible that the followers are being manufacutured by CP.
For all the followers in the other stainless CP mags larry has said that: 1) The follower design is uniqe and proprietary to CP mags 2) It was designed by Magpul and is licensed to CP for manufacturing 3) CP has the 'exclusive' rights to use and manufacture this version of the Magpul gen II follower, which is different than the standard version.
Regarding the follower in the .223 mags, he has not explicitly stated who is doing the manufacturing (at least not that I've seen).

This is a recent change.

C Products and Magpul Industries have become industry partners and have entered into an exclusive agreement for the Gen II followers. C Products will now offer all aluminum magazines with the Gen II followers as our standard follower.
Magpul has developed a Gen II follower for C Products 5.56/.223 stainless steel magazines. This will be the exclusive follower used.
Magpul has further licensed C Products to manufacture the follower for the 6.5, 6.8 and 7.62x39 magazines which will allow these magazines a minimum capacity of 25 rounds. This will be the exclusive follower used for these magazines.
All of us are very excited about this agreement and look forward to developing future products.

I bought the new HK M-16 magazine for cheaper here
http://www.usarmory.com
but I don't see them on the website now. They said they were going to get more of them.
Having seen them and used one (though I did not pay attention to it at the time as it was some one elses gun and mags) on full auto I can say that they are really nice, and really overpriced.
I think Creative Products makes a better mag (I have two of their regular aluiminum ones, with stainless coming in the future) for musch less money and much less weight, and they are also SS.
HK stuff is great but very over rated and over priced. NOBODY is as good as HK THINKS they are.
Not to mention that ALL the HK AR mags I have ever seen are all marked restricted and HK gives you crap about service or warranty issues because in their opinion lowly civillians should not have their cool stuff as we are beneath them.
Creative Products ont he other hand, while they do a large business with military and police are 100% civillian friendly with EXCELLENT customer service.

been using standard military issued m16 mags from the Philippine Army, damn they are good. considering that these are battle tested against leftist new people's army in the infested areas of the country particularly in Mindanao and Bicol province.

(Oh, yeah, my AR IS a Colt...)
