View Full Version : Tips for basic set up (first rifle)...

I'm looking to get my first rifle pretty soon and just wanted to see if my tentative plan sounded reasonable to all you experts...
I'm leaning towards the RRA Entry Tactical. Then adding a YHM four rail free float forearm. Then adding a forward grip on the bottom, a cheap mount for my surefire G2 on the side and a eotech to the top.
My biggest concern is about mounting the eotech. I would like to have a fixed front sight and a flip rear sight that I can use if the eotech fails. I've seen them mounted on forearms, but it seems most mount them back further. What are the pros and cons of both? I'm trying to due this as cost effective as I can...
Also, I want to be able to use this as a patrol rifle (I just started FTO) in the future. Does this set up sound like it would meet my needs? Any advice/tips/opinions would be great
EDIT: I just saw on RRA's website you can get a RRA Dominator EOTech mount instead of the tactical carry handle. Any opinion on these?
Try www.cmmginc.com some of the best out there
I would probably go for the full size if it were me tho..

The RRA Entry Tactical is probably the single most popular AR style and company out there. For a good reason too. I think you will be more than happy.

could you tell me why the entry tac is so popular and desireble? what makes it a a "better" choice comapred to other RRA's and AR15's?

.
The RRA Entry is a good rifle, as good as most. If I were you I would get the basic carbine, master the iron sights and get accessories as you learn you need them. Then maybe take a basic course or two. The Surefire G2 is not the kind of lumination you need on a rifle unless you stay inside an apartment...IMHO.

Well, it's just got a lot of desireable qualities, and it's a quality rifle at a decent price. What else can I say. Good length carbine with the basic style most people prefer.
I wouldn't say it's a "better" choice, that depends on what you want. But if that rifle fits your style and what you want, it's a great choice.

Looks like a nice rifle, but that "tactical carry handle" is pretty much useless for what I would do, which is mount the EoTech (on a LaRue mount) on top of the receiver.

Learn to shoot with the flipup rear first.
Add optics later.
I shot for qual today, first time in six months (normally shoot expert) and today, well, I shot 21 out of 40 (need 18 to qual) which is about the worst I've done in 5 yrs (didn't even KNOW i was supposed to qual till it happened).
Most of the people with problems just couldn't do it with irons cause we use Aimpoints all the time. They apparently had no problem with "dot on target" but focusing on a front sight is apparently too complex for them.
Once you're solid with irons go optics. Cause if the optics die (and they will eventually, usually at the worst time) you'd better be really freaking good with irons.
A Surefire Scout or 9P would make a better dazzler for a rifle. I use a 6P on my M4 but... that's what I've got for now. Before I deploy I may go bigger.
Don't both with the "tactical carry handle".

Seeing this a lot lately. Optics are becoming quite the crutch, yielding the usual effects when one takes crutches away from the lame.
Effects are even more pronounced with the range commando, SOCOM dress-up crowd.

We're all the real thing, however when you're in a country where no shooting is allowed as US troops and you're allowed to shoot once every six months, and your max round count including qualification rounds is 116..... you don't get nearly as much trigger time as you'd like.

Understood. No slam on your scores, or skills, or your colleagues, bro, just an observation from behind the line. ;)
When I was an Air Force SP, we didn't have any of these modern marvels. I had my M16 , no forward assist, triangular handguards and 3 prong flash hider. Always managed to miss expert by one shot. Over confidence always gets me on the range. But to this day, I am still good/very good with my irons. Can't use red dots becasue of astigmatism. Put a white light on my rifle and it works rather well in dark rooms for me. I am not hs/ld, but my set up serves my purpose.
Before I deploy I may go bigger.
Murph, when do you take off? Can you post where too?

We still have a whole lot of M16A2s in the racks, though SF is issued M4s now.
Take a wild guess where I'm likely to go. :)
No, no time frame for when, but with us, it's not "if" it's "when".

I can guess. May even be able to guess the base. My bro is over on his 3rd trip. He LOVES his work.
