View Full Version : Please help a Newbie pick!!
So, I think I decided to go with a RRA for my first AR. Now, which one do I get?
What I want:
To first learn to shoot the AR with iron sights(very well!)
Be able to use other sights in the future.
Use the gun for fun and SHTF situations.
I do like the A2 carry handle look, but not a must.(I know it can be added to a flat top A4, right?)
I like the Idea of a chrome lined barrel and chamber.
So, break the bank and get the Pro-Series Gov? Can I use irons with the EOtech552 on the gun?
Or, do the Entry Tactical and add things like chrome lined barrel, and other sights down the road?(I do not like the R-4 barrel profile)
Maybe Tactical Car A4?
I don't know, what do you guys think?
Thanks, Pete
I just bought a RRA CAR A4. I freaking love this rifle. I also have a pre-ban Colt HBAR. I would take the RRA over the Colt any day. The gun is unbelievably accurate for a semi. The fit and finish is excellent and the price is great. I ordered mine with a chrome lined barrel.
My RRA came with a flat top receiver. I put the Trijicon ACOG 4x32 model TA01NSN on it. This scope is designed for the M4 with the 16" barrel. I'm getting 3/4" groups at 100 yards with the military issue 62 grain SS109's. Great scope on a great rifle!
Coming from an AR newbie myself, I'd go RRA with the removable carry handle. Best of both worlds. I bought a fixed top DPMS. Not unhappy with it, but optics are a bit too high up to be comfortable and I really liked the feel of a RRA 2 stage trigger. YMMV, but Im kicking myself for not spending the extra $150 and getting what I should have

I am thinking about the Elite CAR A4. What handle are you talking about? The standard carry handle, or the "tactical" carry handle that comes with the Elite CAR A4? The "tacticle" handle does not look like much of a "handle" to me, but the look has grown on me.

You want chrome lined.
You want flat top.
You don't need any tactical handle, flip up rear sights do the same thing for less and don't elevate the rail.
You can shoot irons through the Eotech or just take it off. (You won't lose zero if you put it back on in the same spot).

Very consistent 1" groups @ 100 yards with a cheapo-tasco 3-9x, using ss109, though now I have an eotech 511 on it I moved over from my bushmaster.
pnarq, wether or not you can use your irons with the eotech is determined by how/what you mount it on. I believe there are some specific flipup rear sights that will work with an eotech mounted directly to the flattop. What I use, and what I believe is the most popular is the dominator mount, which gives the eotech a bit of extra clearance and has a fixed rear sight. The extra clearance removes most of the front sight from your field of view of the eotech, and gives a decent field of view for your irons as well. I also believe the fixed rear sight used on the dominator mount is sturdier than most of the flip ups, atleast the ones in the price range of what I believe back up irons are worth. I bought the dominator with the upper from eagle paying less than half the price for what it sells for individually. Its the way to go IMO if you plan on an eotech.
Like Mr. Murphy said, chrome lined, flattop, just pick out whatever aesthetically suits you. -dok

Having your front sight in the field of view is not a big deal. I have a front sight in my Aimpoint field of view every day and you don't even really see it.

Listen to Murphy, he knows what he's talking about.

Having the front sight in the field of view of an eotech/aimpoint isn't a big deal, a lot of people don't mind it. When I had my eotech mounted right to the flattop, like murphy said, i barely noticed it was there, but after I put it on a dominator it was like, 'ooh this is so much better'. Still comes up about 1/4 of the way though. Just my op. -dok
