View Full Version : AR-15s and Boresnakes
Any concerns about using a boresnake in an AR-15 barrel? I know some people use them, and I like the idea. However, I noticed the steel core of the brush part was sharp on each end (just cut off). Any chance of scratching the inside of the barrel if the brush is not perfectly lined up???

If you use the proper snake there is no problem.
The brush is made to contact and clean the bore.
The are no sharp ends on my Boresnakes.
+1 on the Boresnakes.
I like them.
There is a possibility that the brush could become worn and jab a brush end into the rifling but it would take a very long time for the brush to wear to that point as long as you are not using a copper disolving product on the Boresnake.
The brushes are over bore size and center themselves while in the chamber too.
I use M-Pro 7 CLP and M-Pro 7 bore cleaner with the Boresnakes.
I can't get a magnet to grab the end of the Boresnake brush so I am thinking the brush twist cores are made of aluminum or pot metal not steel.
The ends are much softer than the barrel steel.

I use a boresnake on mine.
Similarly, I wonder about some of the items used to clean the gas tube. What do you recommend for the gas tube?
boresnakes for AR's rock. As far as the gas tube, i occasionally blast some brake cleaner down it, but i dont worry too much about it.

Put nothing bigger than your elbow in your gas tube!
Leave it alone and don't over oil and gum it up.:)

I keep a .22 boresnake in my support kit (the one that goes in the butt pack), but I still have an Otis kit and scraper set in the handle VFG and left compartment of my VLTOR modstock.
Great idea, I just wish it fit in my rifle, somewhere.
I use and have a Bore Snake in my field kit. The Bore Snake is not a replacement for a rod and brush and jag it is field expedient.

I keep a boresnake in the VFG. I love mine.
Boresnakes are good. Can't see any reason for it causing bore damage. I have and use bore snakes for my .22 cal (AR and 10-22) and .308 guns. Last year I bought an Otis cleaning kit. Cost is about what 3 bore snakes would cost, and it will clean from .22 to 45 cal bores. The Otis is the best system I've used yet. Can use brushes and patches and the rod won't damage the bore either. I get my guns much cleaner than when I used the bore snake alone. I'll never use a 3 piece cleaning rod again.

Boresnakes are a handy supplement to standard cleaning equipment, but not a replacement. They're also an excellent field expedient, for quick, light cleaning and to check for bore obstructions. Within those roles, they are outstanding and must-haves.
Boresnakes are good, but they will not clean your chamber. Could be important...
I agree.
Bore Snakes are a supplement for fast cleaning in the field or at home but a shooter still needs a good solid rod and material for detail cleaning in addition to the 'snake.
