How can I take just a portion of a previous response from a thread and copy it to my response?

That will bring up the reply window with the entire message of that person already typed out. Just manually delete any text you do not want quoted.

Thanks. I noticed that but thought I could just highlight the portion to be copied and press that button. Thank you.

No, unfortunately, there is no shortcut way to quote just text you want.
