I just picked up my first AR and recently bought a like new Rem 870 shotgun...Being a pistol man...I dont have a safe for long guns yet so I just have them in soft cases in a locked room...my mags arent even loaded...

Just curious...Where do you guys keep your AR and is it ready to go if the SHTF....In a safe ?? In a carrying case under the bed or in a closet ?? No carrying case...just out in the open ?? Is the AR loaded or are just the mags ?? Thanks...

My two ARs are in hardtop cases, a couple rifles in soft cases and a couple just laying in the corner of my closet. The only gun I keep outside of my closet is the glock that I carry. I'd really like to get a safe but it's just really tough for me to justify the money. Maybe if ammo wasn't so f'n expensive.

I have an alarm, 2 big dogs (a pitbull mix and a siberian husky) and a bunch of nosey neighbors, just fyi :) -dok

Yeah...I want a safe as well but the nice ones are real expensive...If you wanna play you gotta pay :)

You certainly will sleep much more soundly knowing your firearms are in a gunsafe.

If not having a safe makes you an irresponsible gun owner then i suppose i'm not a very responsible gun owner either.

I sleep much better knowing I have a gun loaded and within arms reach.

To each his own I guess.

BTW, no wife, no girlfriend, no children, no pets, if I hear a noise it is a problem.

I keep one AR in the truck ready to rock, 4 in the gun safe, a pistol beside my bed, and a Benelli in the corner.

Your conclusion is that I secure all my firearms in a safe except when participating in some firearms related function (range, target practice, training, etc.). For a burglar that would be a career ending conclusion.

When Iam not at home the guns are in the safe, other than what is with me and on my person.

when Iam at home the AR is with me 80% of the time in the house within a arms reach,,,,if not the AR, my glock 27 or 23 is at my arms reach. And if the AR is down for cleaning then the SKS Chinese trooper is put in to service.

My AR sits right next to the bed, and of course it's hot. It's just a big exspensive stick if it ain't.

In the closest corner to the bed behind a closet door ready to go with the flip of the safety.

AR in the bedroom closet with 75gr TAP loaded mags. G19 in the room as well. 2 is 1 and 1 is none.

Guns locked in a safe will do you ZERO good when someone is coming in the front door.

Well I personally keep my airsoft on my nightstand and an EMPTY M-4gery besided my bed. I like having my EMPTY Chamber Glock on the nightstand and a Ruger without a mag under the bed frame!

JUST JOKING!!!!:laughabove:

Just thought I would say something stupid like that couldn't resist!

Actually I keep my AR LOADED proped on the nightstand between my bed and the nightstand. I also have 2-3 mags on the stand beside me. I keep my carry gun (Glock 23) on the nightstand along with my Glock 34. I also have my SKS paratrooper proped empty chamber against a desk less than two feet from my bed. OH and a Mossberg 20 gauge with Buckshot on the other side of the bed. All this and varrious other SMALL and LARGE Arms and munitions avaiable at my beconing call!

I pitty the MFer who makes it to MY ROOM with ME IN IT! :laughabove: :50cal:

Yes, unless they take the time to put them in the safe every time they leave. There is no free lunch here. If my house gets broken into while I am not there, and the BG takes a gun out of my house, then so be it.

Take that holier-than-thou-art bull **** with you. We're all responsible gun owners here. If we so choose to leave our weapons hot and within reach then so be it. I agree that a safe is a good idea when out of the house but not all of us have the space or money to own one.

My self loading .223 rifle is not loaded as it is not what I would go for. We have to have the magazines locked into the rifles here and then that mag is limited to 10 rounds (for now).

Not saying that I would NOT have the AR ready to go. With the current requirements it is simply not a practicle option...sooooo

I have my G23 loaded and ready within hands reach and my 870 is loaded by the nightstand. I also have my M14 with an empty chamber, but loaded magazine in the closet about 2 steps away. My old web gear is right there as well with 6 more if zombies attack.

I have kids in my home, but they are trained and proficient on every firearm present in the home and even some that are not.

When we are not home, the firearms are locked in their safe. It feels better to have them secured in my absence and I certainly want to make it as hard as possible for thieves to get them.

No need IMHO. Let me give you a bad scenario. You come into your home to FIND a BG in there. You run to where you keep your firearms only to find that they are all locked in the safe!

What is really SHOCKING to me is that people live in this neat, perfect little world where they plan for the best scenario (not the worst). Plan for the worst and hope for the best! ;)

I keep my rifles locked in the safe for the most part, but I have four pistols laying out and about along with a shotgun, and no, I normally don't lock them up when I leave, one or two of them are carried with though. I do have kids, two that still live with me, and both have access to the firearms and have had access for several years.

Now, my kids have little or no interest in 'playing' with guns. They know what they are for and know how to use them. My 16 year old works at a range and is my shooting buddy from time to time when she still has time for the old man.

I guess I'm the most irresponsible guy in town. I'll go stand in a corner now.

This is assuming that one is entering into their home without any means of defense.

I would much rather come into my home having a reasonable expectation of NOT running into my own loaded firearms pointing in the wrong direction. Leaving them out is like handing a BG the means he might not otherwise had. This is another bad scenario I guess, but one that could be avoided by simply locking them up.

So, you still think your safe is safe. Hell, the fire rating is longer than the amount of time it takes someone to peal a safe, and it's normally only half an hour.

You might hinder an amateur, slow down a pro, but a safe is minimal protection at best, it's one of those feel-good things in reality. I trust my alarm system more than my safe.

I hear you, it is a personal choice. I am not trying to tell anyone what they should do, or that their choice is wrong. I have my reasoning for the choice I make and it works for me. I am simply explainging why it works FOR ME.

My house is usually empty for no more than a half hour. We live in a low crime area, but I would not want to came home to face my M14 and 20 rounds with only my G23. Do I think that my safe is an end all in protection? No, I do not. Do I feel comfortable NOT using it because some pro might come to visit in my stead? No, I do not.

We have an alarm system too. I doubt that thief is going to try picking, burning or cutting my safe for even 10 minutes while the alarm is sounding. Figure he has 10 minutes tops to get his deed done. It is an elementary decision in my case.

I should be walking in my home with my G19, but that just isn't always the case. There is NO FREE LUNCH with any of these scenarios and you have to do what you think is best for you.

I know that I am a lazy person. What that translates into is that I will NOT go into my safe every single night and pull out a firearm. This leaves me SOL if someone comes into my house. I am not willing to take the chance.

Another easy thing people can do if they are concerned about leaving their firearms out when not at home and finding someone pointing them at them, is to put the mags into one of those speed safes (that either read your finger print or has a quick touch pad). An empty gun is worthless and would only take you the owner 1-2 seconds to get the mags out. Just a thought....
