View Full Version : Firepoint/JPoint sight
Who knows something about these sights?
I can get a JPoint for around $220-250 or a Firepoint for $150.
From what I've seen, either (a) they are all made by Firepoint (as was the Tasco Optima) and JP just markets them under the JPoint name or else (b) JP makes the JPoint, based on the Firepoint but with some unspecified improvments.
I'm trying to figure out whether a Firepoint with an 8 min. dot for $150 (new) would be a good deal.

Haven't heard of the firepoint (I don't keep track of the latest optics too much). The guys shooting this style of optic at local matches are all shooting the J-Point, and always seem to have postitive remarks about them.
I'd definitely keep huting for feedback on the cheaper model. There might be a very good reason it's cheaper.
I know Firepoint was the original (The firepoint came first and the JPoint is actually the latest one), British made version that Tasco released with nothing but a name change as the Optima. Both Firepoint and Tasco are out of the business and that's when JP started selling it as the JPoint. CZ also put their name on some of the firepoints and sold them on pistols - I think that's the version I can get for $150 (without the pistol, but with a CZ mount). I've also read that JP will do repairs on the Firepoint and Optima sights. With Docter, Firepoint and Tasco out of business, the JPoint is the only current version and is, according to what I've read, "improved," but I don't know how.
I'm mainly wondering if the $100 savings would make it worthwhile to get a Firepoint as my first one and maybe move to a JPoint when it dies, or is it going to be so inadequate I can't get 15-20 local matches use out of it.

Bren,
I think you are on the right track. Tasco Optima and Firepoint are the exact same sight. I had three Optimas between me, my dad and a shooting buddy. Two of the three of them worked great, my buddies lost adjustment after about a year.
The Jpoint is a new sight, manufactured by JP Enterprises. Supposed to be a little better construction than the Optimas and Firepoints. (metal instead of plastic).
Finally, DOCTER is not out of business, they just don't have a US importer anymore. You can buy them all over Europe according to Beven Grams at grams engineering. I got one of the last ones he had from him for my race gun G34 and I LOVE IT. Night and day difference from the Optima I had, but also a night and day price difference. I have $600 invested in the machine work to "melt" mine plus the cost of the sight.

I have 2 of optima 2000, recently got them from ebay, ~$110 shipped.
3.5 MOA..Love 'em. BTW great seller, stands behind the items...
Never mind - I saw the JP will throw in the mount with the sight if I order directly, so that cuts the savings on the questionable, out of production Firepoint down to about $50-60 and that makes me think I'll just buy a JPoint from JP.
I just recently bought a jpoint direct from jp. The packaging is marked "made in the UK".

Yeah, I was pretty sure they were still made in the original factory, but rumor has it the current ones are improved somehow. I just ordered mine direct from JP as well.
