Would like opinions on the Mossberg 590A1 12 ga. Saw one with 9 shot capacity. I would appreciate opinions and facts regarding any good and bad points.
Also, is there a Remington 870 that is comprable to the 590A1?
And where is the best place to purchase either?
Thanks ;)

I have a Mossy 590A1 with 18.5" bbl and ghost rings sights. I like it a lot and it's easily my favorite shotgun. I like the shorter barrel instead of the 20" because I want it as compact and handy as possible. The 20" bbl with full length mag tube feels just a little long and nose heavy to me. The advertised capacity of the 18.5" tube is 5, but I can get 6 2-3/4 shells in it.
Things I like about the Mossy: (1) I like the ambidextrous tang-mounted safety which to me seems more more natural than the Remington safety. Also the Winchester safety, forward of the trigger, is too long a reach for my small hands. (2) The bolt release on the Mossy is in a better position than the Remmy, which requires you to break your firing grip. (3) The ghost rings with the red front sight tip are da bomb! Really easy to acquire a target fast. (4) The bolt allows a visual chamber-loaded check. You can't do that on a Remmy or Winny. (5) The A1 model feels like it was built to last, from the heavy barrel, to the stronger receiver with metal trigger guard and safety. Feels solid, just like my old Remmy Wingmaster police model.
Things I don't like: Not much. The ghost ring isn't as solid as the Wilson Combat sight. It's sheet metal, but it's fairly thick and solid, plus it's got beefy protective ears on each side. I also had to adjust it way up to zero slugs at 50 yards because the front sight blade sits so high. These are just minor nits.
A comprable Remington 870? I guess one of their police models (not an Express model). Or an older Wingmaster police model that was built up.
For purchasing one, I would just get the model number of your choice off Mossberg's web site, then contact your favorite local dealer and have him order it for you. That's what I did.
What ChessMan said, plus you can hang a bayo on it if you need some crowd controle:supergrin:
I got the 20" version with speed feed stock and ghost rings, I added the heat shield after seeing Faulkner's here on GT, it takes a bit of persistance but it can be done.
Here is a pic I just took for you, till you get yours!

You can get a heat shield on a 590A1? I though the barrel was too thick. I have an 18.5" 590A1 on oder and I could be talked into putting one on as long as it is not too hard. Did you have to bend metal much?
As for ordering Impact Guns has them for $389+$14 shipping. It is the best deal I could find and they ship to CA which the others wouldn't.
I am getting it for all the reason list above by others.
Yes you have to open up the front a bit and I filed and smoothed the edges so they would not scratch the parkierized finish, I even taped off the barrel where I slid it over at. The tuff part was elongating the four bolt holes on the front strap, that steel is tuff! I used a small rat tail file. You will also need to get 1/4" longer bolts, thats about it, I think it is well worth the trouble.
P.S. here is a link for the heat shield.

I have a 20" Mossy 590A1 with Ghost Ring sights - my single favorite firearm period. A fun gun! The bayonet is a MUST! Even if you only put it on the gun one time - it is worth it! LOL
Hey salvo , what did that set of ghost rings run you?
Having owned two in the last 8-10 years my only complaint was disassembly/reassemly after cleaning. Even with the owner's manual, reinstalling the bolt assembly can be tedious and nothing I'd want to have to due under stress!
Otherwise, no complains.
amd4me, the ghost rings came with the 590A1. The only thing added was the heat shield.
what's different about the 590 that gives it greater capacity?
I can only fit 7 2-3/4 shells into my 20" 500 (and 5 into my 18"...not a huge deal, but I'm curious

I too have the 18.5" version of the 590. I thought I was the only one since everybody and their mother flocked to the 9-rounder 20".
i am thinking about getting another shotty. not sure. maybe that FN tactical whatchacallit. I dunno.

Has anyone checked out Mossberg's web site (http://www.mossberg.com/) lately? I don't see any 590 models on it anymore. Anyone know what's up? Did they discontinue the series or are they restricting access to LEO/Military only? If they stop making the 590 and/or 590A1, that would be a sad day!

When you select "500 series special purpose shotguns" at that screen they show the basic persuader, there is an arrow below the pic of the gun that(it says"MORE MODELS")allows you to scroll between models the 590 is last I think ,took me a while to figure it out also.

Just to add I own the 20in 590 w\heat shield,I like it alot but I kinda wish I had got the one with ghost rings instead.
Either they changed model numbers or the 590A1 appears to be gone, as it was 51663 and the one on the website is 50668. Who knows....

OK, it looks like model 51663 is the old 590A1 with 20" barrel. But it looks like the 590A1 with 18.5" barrel is gone.

That is where I bought mine from. Don't worry about the LE thing it is just designed for LE not sold exclusively to LE. Kind of like how you can get 870Ps and 700PSSs from Remington.
good lookin out, glad to see its still there.
I still wonder about the capacity thing though, I wonder if a follower/spring change in a 500 could add that extra round from the 590?

i noticed that too. no more 51517 from them at least. I love my 51517.
I sent them an email back when I last posted and they finnally sent a reply. They still do sell the 51517. They might have it off their consumer page becasue it is meant for LE. They might make their own LE website like Remmington has. I suspect they want their pages to look like they sell sporting guns to non-LE and LE guns to LE/military, but in reality anyone can have one.
