I love my new 1911 but hate grips they came with. Was just going to order some but thought maybe I could do some improving on my own. Still may end up buying a set but these are much better (for me) than stock. The stock ones were a fat. I sanded them down smooth. Then used 220 to make them real smooth. Once they were sanded, I rubbed black dye over them to highlight the grain, then sanded them again. I then applied a few coats of rub on poly to them. I used satin because that is what I had. Still might do another coat in gloss. Not sure yet. I also want to pick up some nicer grip screws.
If I buy a set, I want to get a set of those grey stained ones with black highlights. I think those would look sweet on this gun. Thought about getting some grey stain but this wood is too dark. I didnt even stain these. The color is the natural wood color.

Good job! Those look way better than the orangish wood grips that came on mine.

Thanks,
I hated mine. They actually turned out much better than my crappy camera shows. Really happy with them. I'll try to take some more. I need to stop buying so much gun stuff and buy a decent camera.

I like the double diamonds the way they came, but to each his own. I dont see a purpose for smooth grips. I want checkering everwhere, and I want it sharp.

Heres a better pic.
I actually like the tactical version of the diamond cut the best. I dont have any problem with the grip with the smooth. The smooth ones are actually more comfortable. The way they came from the factory, they didnt look good to me (personaly opinion) and they also didnt fit my hand good. They just seemed fat. The cut was also pretty aggressive. They actually hurt when shooting a lot.
I have to give it to Kimber. They sell their guns with some nice grips out of the box. I wish other companies would do so as well.

Well, I actually have some slimline alumagrips. I must be an odd ball sized hand because the slimline are a little too skinny and the regular ones are a little too fat. I wish they mad a med sized grip. Thats what started this little poject. I havent tried the regular alumigrips yet.

If standard are too wide and slimline are too thin, then get some VZ Gators, they are in between:

You got it. The ridges are standard width, but he grooved areas are thinner.

Heh, I'm the exact opposite. I don't see the purpose for checkering. I want it smooth. I find the grip is more comfortable, and I've never had a problem gripping any of my 1911s with smooth non checkered grips and non checkered front straps.
But as you said, each his own...

Smooth is fine, until it rains, you fall in the water, you bleed, you get soeone else blood on you, or you start sweating.

I'll remember that next time I go off to War.
Please dont take offense. I just couldnt resist that one. Actually I pack so much Rambo gear that my wife makes fun of me. Probably will end up putting slim line tactical alumigrips on them. Atleast I have some purdy range grips.
