Let me begin by stating that my search has not resulted in the information I was looking for being here already.

So here's my question: do you think it is better to have a folding stock on a shotgun or a pistol grip only? It will be used for HD first and foremost, however, I hope to rely on it should the SHTF. Outdoors I could see a use for a folder where slugs might come into play, but indoors it seems like it handles better without the stock and seems unnecessary at HD ranges.

Let me start out by saying that I am a big believer in keeping shoulder weapons shoulder weapons, meaning, a shotgun should have a stock on it.

However, I do have a lust deep inside for a class 3 short barreled shotgun that I just can't shake. You know, about a 12 inch barrel with a birds head pistol grip and a pistol grip fore end, maybe a laser sight to help aim things. Useless... perhaps, but I sure would like to have one all the same.

Bullman and I share the same affliction for small shotties. I went with a Serbu Super Shorty (www.serbu.com) and havent looked back. I will admit that I have a Knoxx CopStock folder on my work gun since accurate placement of slugs would be a necessity, but strictly for the HD use, the Serbu handles much easier in the confines of a home, and there is much less barrel for the bad guy to attempt to take away it from me.
I have shot it with slugs held so I am lookig over the reciever (no sights) and can hit the target at 25 yards, but it would be less than precise.

A standard full stock.

Shotguns are not house clearing weapons (if you DO need to, there are ways with a full stock shotgun), they are hallway howitzers. Call cops, aim at door and hole up. They come in and boom. You don't clear a house alone. Even with 2 it's hard. Day before yesterday I went in with 8 clearing a building (well trained and constantly) and we came out with 5 ( exercise). There's always something you can miss.

The only reason I'd put a folding stock on a shotgun is for very small places. Hiking, boats, etc. Pistol grip only is useless for me, it's very hard to hit anything.

+1 MrMurphy, pistol grips only are basically contact weapons to me. If you want to hit what you aim at, go w/ a stock of some kind. If it's a folder, make sure it's rigid when open.
