Hey All, took the BushMaster M4 AR out last weekend for a trial run. Ran about 300 rds of reloads through it (cant remember the brand, but its in a red whie and blue box), at about 300 rounds, I was getting crazy double feeds every other pull. The next day, I ran 30 rounds of WWB ammo through it, no problem. I'm not sure if I have an ammo issue, or is it normal for an ar to need cleaning at 300 rds? My AK will go 1000+ w/o cleaning, but i prefer the AR any day just seems like a drag to have to clean every 300 rds.

If it's a brand new gun, give it time. Also, it might be a specific magazine giving you problems.
And no, you don't need to clean it every 300 rounds (but do clean it every range session regardless of how many rounds you fired, carbon buildup sucks), I've run 14 full mags (several on full auto) through a completely dry M16 without a hiccup before, and it was already dirty.

My home built worked 100% from the start. It is getting alot smoother after each trip to the range. Sounds like his is an ammo related problem.

I've had close to 1K rounds through my AR's before cleaning and never had reliability issues.
I'm also guessing mag/ammo related problem. I only shoot good ammo in mine.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't double feeding indicative of a bad magazine? Possibly a bad extractor and the bolt feeding a new round while the old one is still in there. I am pretty sure it is the mag and not the later.
Almost forgot. I have run approx. 1000 rounds through my A2 in Iraq without a malfunction. I do recomend cleaning it though after every range session. It is just a good habbit to be in.

Quality AR's can go thousands of rounds without cleanings despite what some may say.

+1 I've put a full case(1000 rounds) of the Wolf poly coated steel through one of mine.. worked fine, but sure was stinky :freak:
That being said.. I clean it after every range session. Rule of "thumb" is to never put a gun up dirty unless its a Ruger .22 auto ;)
sounds like you were using Ultramax. Maybe from Cabelas? Never used it but have not heard great things abou it.
What is this "Clean" you speak of?
Clean it after each range session (just like what the other gentlemen said). Nothing beats a clean rifle.
There was a soldier who fought against the MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front) before a peace accord with the Philippine Government was signed in the early 90's. His M16 wasn't cleaned before the operation, and the bolt carrier became sluggish. Good thing, another soldier brought along a small can of WD-40. They just sprayed the bolt carrier without even field stripping the rifle.
