View Full Version : Need 1911 help!
I looking into buying a 1911 to shoot for a while. I've had a couple Colts and a Springfield but sold them a few years ago. I want to spend around $1,200 or less. I have considered Sig,S&W,and Kimber. Where is the best place to buy online and which is the prefered pistol right now? Thanks!

Don't know much about Sig...didnt hear anything fantastic about them. Kimber...they look nice...I hear some shoot nice. They have much higher percentage of problems for some reason. Even a salesperson at my best local gun shop/range said that 90% of them function perfectly when I was looking to purchase a 1911. The gunsmith told me an several others that he highly recommended the S&W and that he has been very impressed by them.
I like the features, the look, and the price is not hella bad. I bought mine at Bass Pro for 829 which is about 100 bucks more than what it'd cost me on gunbroker, but I didnt feel like messin around. One range trip so far with approx 125 rounds fired. Apparently this 1911 doesnt need a break in period.
Also, I like the satin stainless on the S&W instead of the polished with sharp edges like on the springfield. Oh and made in my fav country...this one.
Nothing is perfect though so do some research. I also checked out a few 1911 forums before I made up my mind.

I prefer a Colt but that is just me. It all depends on what your needs/wants are. You can buy a really nice 1911 under $1200. You will get various opinions on each model, and they all produce fine 1911's. Good luck.

Find a Colt Series 70 re-issue.
Thanks for the replies. I swear I have more fun trying to pick out my next gun than actually buying it. I do like the SW 1911. How does their aluminum frame compare to the steel frame? As far as durability. I also like the Springfield TRP is that gun worth the money? Who has the best deals online?
Springfields are an excellent choice.

Now that I have more time I will give you some reasoning for my answer. The Colt has proven itself time and time again, Colt is the only manufacturer that works from the original ordnance specs. Everyone else is reverse engineered from Colt.
Here in the last couple of years Colt has really improved their QC and the latest models that are coming out have been great. With the Series 70 you don't have to worry about removing a firing pin safety to make it operate the way it should have originally.
You can keep it box stock and shoot it just like it is ot you may decided that you want to make some mods to it in order to suit your personal taste. That is what I decided to do. You can take a look at mine here:

Personally I decided the firing pin safety was a plus for me. I dont see any other modern pistols having problems with them. If you are a purist of 1911 I can understand wanting to do without that kind of stuff.
If you are an enthusiast the Colt has cool factor. I originally was really lookin at springfield but didnt like that it was foreign made.
Here is a pic of my first magazine fired through the S&W at I want to say 20-25 feet. I'm not a great shooter either so I'm not sayin this is great.

At your price point you simply cannot do better than the Springfield TRP or TRP Operator, IMO.

You can find them for around $1,000 used, and I wouldn't pay over $1,200.00 or so new.
However, prices may have gone up in the year or so since I got mine, so you may have to pay closer to $1,300 or more....

I really like my Colt's. My favorite has to be my 10mm Delta Elite.
I also like the springfields, and some of the kimbers.
I don't like the S & W. I just can't look past the stupid warning about it firing without a magazine. That breaks the deal for me right there.
For what it's worth, In your shoes I would probably get either a Colt or a Springfield.

Same here. I actually like the looks of the S&W, but the warning & external extractor break the deal for me.
I just can't bring myself to buy a 1911 with an external extractor. :shakehead: :nono:

I stand corrected, I am entertaining the idea of picking another one up to keep stock. I will definately keep Bud's in mind.
Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the help. I ended up going to a local Gun Show today. I got to play with them all. I ended up with a SW1911. I actually like it better than the TRP. The triger felt the better and the gun was easier on the hands. I also looked at the Colts but for some reason I really like that S&W. It was only $715 so with the extra cash I'll have to pick up another gun! :)
I was going to buy some Chip McCormick 10 round mags for the S&W1911. Do they work well in these guns?

My S&W 1911 does not like the Chip McCormick mags.
Your experience may differ though.
Are they the extra power 10 rounders? What problems are you having?

Don't make it "either or", get a Springfield for the "purist" in you and an S&W for the "non-purist" in you. If the stupid "weapon can fire without magazine" warning bothers you, it's easily fixed.

The follower jumps the slide catch.
Well I took the new gun to the range. Shot great! No problems. Here is a pic. of my last 4 rounds at 75ft offhand. The only complaint is the triger was a kinda sharp on my finger. Should I just sand it down?
