I'm looking for Steel Core ammo in 8mm or 7.62x54. Some ammo say's it's steel and some don't. Also what places can I buy this from. I've only bought from AIM and Sportsmans Guide only since that's all I really know of.
i think i have a few cans of the 54r steel core at the shop i work PT at. i might be able to test some tomorrow.

I have a crate of 7.62x54R 147gr Czech silver tip ammo that is definately steel core. I've pulled a few bullets and cut them in half to look. They're not bonded cores either. :) I'm not sure how hard the steel is, but it's definately different than the rest of the bullet.

This stuff is great, At the right humidity level when shot against steel you will get a nice shower of sparks that almost look like the stuff was HP. although it does a number on my steel bangers but its fun n'dirty

Accuracy is good in my guns out to 200 yards on a 10" gonga at least
Try ammoman.com they have Hungarian yellow/silver tip 147gr. steeel core, I don't think the core is hardened like stated above but it'll still penetrate like crazy. Also on the newsstands now is Combat Arms magazine , it has an excellent article on the the 7.62x54r including all the color codes for the different types of bullets, good read!

Try gunbroker.com. Steel core is usually utilized as armor piercing rounds, and it is limited in importation and production by ATF.
It would be harder and harder for civilian to obtain steel core rounds.
On the other hand, civilian in general does not really have the need for steel core rounds. Due to consistency in the steel core, these rounds are not as accurate as their counter part.
