View Full Version : Why am I pro-.45 GAP?

1. It is more practical than .357 SIG, .45 GAP can shot in an .ACP revolver w/full moon clips; .357 SIG cannot be fired in a .357 mag revolver.
2. It's still .45, a .45 will blow a big hole in an attacker.
3. Magazines for a Glock 37 or XD GAP are alot cheaper than for my Bersa(40.00 a pop?!).
4. I examined a Glock pistol personally, I classify them as border-line superior; good enough for me.
5. I like safe-action type guns, they give auto firepower w/wheel gun simplicity.
6. Numerous LEO agencies are using it, cops seem to like it; usually an indicator than a caliber will be around alot(remember how the FBI's adoption of the .357 magnum breathed life into that gun, circa 1935?).
7. .45 GAP=Competition for .45 acp, this equals better prices on quality handguns; better value for us consumers.
8. .45 acp was fired in 1910 for 6,000 rds., no malfunctions in said pistol. .45 GAP was recent fired in a G37, by Chuck Taylor for 10,000 rds; no malfunctions from said pistol. Both are outstandingly reliable.
9. .44 special was never destroyed by .44 magnum; .45 Colt was never killed by .45 acp; .38 Super never killed 9mm Luger. There is no reason by .45 ACP and .45 GAP cannot flourish alongsside one another.
10. Mutiple companies are making .45 ammunition: Remington, Winchester, Speer, Federal, Hornady; this indicates that .45 GAP will survive.
11. .45 GAP has less recoil(reportedly). This means a good thing for my arthritis-wracked body.
12. .45 GAP is becoming more commonly available, that is a good thing.
Well said, I 'm really liking the GAP big time. I can't understand the hatred towards this caliber. Odds are the GAP haters have never held a 37,8 or 9 let alone fired one.
And they are no more expensive to shoot than an ACP. At least not where I live.
I pray we get the last laugh.
Not to be too critical, but reasons 3, 4, and 5 having nothing to do with GAP in particular.
Also, though I've never fired a GAP chambered pistol, I simply do not believe reason 11. Physically, I cannot understand how, everything else being equal, a GAP could recoil less than an ACP if the ballistics are equal.
With that said, I have no personal reason to own a GAP for now, but I do wish it success. Who knows, later I may have a reason for it. Four years ago I would have said that I have no reason for a .45ACP, but now it's my favorite handgun cartridge.

I've stated in other threads and other webs (hey, that rhimes) that I like the 45GAP concept. Probably my favorite all-time Glock is the G19 and now I have a 45 bullet in the same frame. I'm likin' my G38 big time. Try it, you'll like it! It's not a flash in the pan. It's not going to fade. Think about it.......the 41 magnum, the 10mm, the 454 casull, the 44 special, et all. About the only calibre that didn't make it was the 38 super. Never caught on and never will.

Given comparable ammo in comparably-sized Glocks (G21 and G37, for example), I think .45 ACP and GAP have similar recoil characteristics. This is not surprising since the rounds are ballistically almost identical (with similar loadings in terms of bullet weight and velocity) and the slide weights are nearly identical. Thing is, the G21 has very nice recoil characteristics, thus so does the G37.
I think the .45 GAP in Glock platforms has two targets: (1) those who want a .45 but find the G21 and G30 a bit thick in the butt and (2) those who DON'T want a 9mm but find the .40 Glocks to have rather nasty recoil characteristics. Big bullet, small grip, pleasant recoil: what's not to like?
The gap is a shorter round- the action doesn't have to travel as "far" to cycle. It's gonna be quicker than a corresponding acp load.
I like both my Glock ACP and GAP.
I reload for both of them so ammo is not a problem. Only down side is that I insist on chasing every last single piece of GAP brass until I find it!

cmzneb - Dang, are we related! You sound just like me.
Gary - I agree with the reasons you cite for getting a Glock GAP gun. Love the frame size and HATE the snappy recoil of the 40s.

I'm so bad about it, one night at the range it was getting dark and I was still looking for two pieces of GAP brass. Had to break out my big spotlight.
Found the brass though!!!:)
I love my Glock 37! I also love my Springfield Armory Loaded 1911. I'm having one problem, though. I would like to get a sub-compact .45, but don't know if I should go with GAP or ACP... It's kind of like choosing a favorite son or daughter. I may get a tiny Springfield 1911 or a G30. Then again, I sure like the G39... Oh well. Really, it seems that I need Springfield to make their GAP 1911... I'm slowly hearing more and more about the GAP, meaning interest in it is growing. I'll shoot my G37 for now and wait to see what comes out in the near future...

If you really want a small 1911 chambered in .45 GAP, you might want to take a look at the new one from Para-Ordnance. (This is not an endorsement of that pistol; just a FYI in case you haven't heard that Para has one. Personally, I'll take a G39--in fact, I did!)

The single most important thing to remember is that you WANT that new pistol/caliber. And when tendonitis, arthritis, etc. sets in, snappy/harsh recoil is not a good thing.

As if you'll be able to tell the difference...
I like the concept of .45ACP performance in a smaller frame gun. Love shooting the gun (G38) its so sweet.
For glock to put the time and money into this project, get at least four of the major ammo makers to tool up and make ammo for a gun that he's the only one making right now. Seems to me that there's a lot more on the menu for this cartridge than is being put out on the public table at this time. Just speculation on my part.

Springfield offers an XD and Para-Ordnance offers a small 1911 in .45 GAP.

I stand corrected. I've seen the Springfield and heard about the Para-Ordance offering but can't say that I've seen it at any dealers.
I still feel there's more to come on the GAP than has been currently put out to the public.
