View Full Version : new kimber no external extractor
Im looking to buy a new full size kimber and want to know what models do not have the external extractor? What kimbers with the external extractors have had problems? I was also told by my dealer that it would take six to eight weeks to get my kimber in. Is that normal?
I thought that I read somewhere the Kimber was going away from the external extractors all together.

Yeah any new stock Kimber should now have and external.

Kimber was having problems getting their guns to run with the internal extractors way back when. The external extractor was supposed to be the cure-all for their ills but they weren't able to pull it off.
So now they are going back to the original design but one has to wonder if they have fixed the original problem that led them to the external extractor in the first place.
I don't think I'd jump on the Kimber bandwagon until they've proven they are selling reliable pistols, but that's just me.

A good internal extractor works great, and if you get a bad one they are easy to replace. With the external extractors, either they work or they don't. If they don't, it's a warranty issue and not something you can fix yourself. Give me the internal extractor anyday.

Actually, they came up with the external to meet the demands for a loaded chamber indicator. Now that they have gone back to the internal, they cut the notch in the barrel hood for the LCI like Springfield does.

Does this mean the "external extractor" Kimbers will now become a collector item and cost even more than their already over price cost.
Sure Glad I own Colts.

You mean they went to all the trouble of engineering an external extractor just so they could have a loaded chamber indicator, and now all that development has been thrown in the garbage and replaced with a simple cut in the barrel hood? If that is true there are some folks at Kimber that should be let go.

Ridiculous is the only thing that comes to mind.
To the OP, the wait time will depend on which model you want. My dealer has everything in stock, with the possible exception of the Tactical series.

Kimber went to the external extractor for one reason. It was a cheaper way to make a 1911. The original internal extractor design has lasted for 95 years without a significant problem.
Kimber wanted to cut $25 off the manufacturing costs. That's it...no other reason.

Kimber already had the cut in the hood of the barrel before the external extractor came out. They came out with the "Tactical" extractor because Para-Ordnance came out with the "Power" extractor and people kept saying how wonderful it was that Para fixed the weak link of the 1911. It just turned out that the fix wasn't much of a fix, and it wasn't really needed. Also, Kimber had been putting external extractors on the Team Match for years before they messed with the regular models.

As I understand it, SA tried to say their LCI in the barrel hood was patentable. Until that issue cleared up, Kimber was stuck with how to do an LCI.
The externals were also supposed to solve the problem of new guns with extractors that need adjusting. It obviously didn't do that on the shorter guns where they had all the problems.
My Kimber Warrior has an internal extractor. It was in stock at the shop were I bought it;)

I plan on getting a Kimber TLE with an internal by the end of the summer. Ive held and shot many a 1911 and keep coming back to Kimber. The way they feel and shoot to me is just plain awesome.

How are we going to know they're producing a quality pistol if no one jumps on the bandwagon? I tell you what...you pick one up and let me know how it goes. After I hear a few hundred good reports, I may decide to go with another Kimber but until then I'm still trying to heal my wounds of being burned by Kimber on two guns.

It will take a long time for Kimber to get back their sterling reputation after this external extractor fiasco. People always tend to focus on where the leak was, while paying no attention to the rest of the dam. To make things even worse, their warranty/customer service gets alot of complaints as well.

A buddy of mine was so proud of his new Kimber (external extractor) and I never even said word one about the external extractor to him. Why should I? He was so happy with the gun, who am I to ruin his fun?
I don't even think he knows where the extractor is.
My Kimber when I bought it would eject every case right into the top of my head. Pulled the extractor out, bent it slightly, and instant correction. All cases went straight to the right.
Now I have a Wilson bulletproof extractor on it, as my original extractor had a chip in it, and it has yet to have a failure to extract.
