So Ive found rusting and a little pitting on the slide serations and also along the SW logo on the slide. The mag release is rusting as well. Also noticing a little rubbing going on with the hammer and beavertail... So smith in it's greatness wants me to send in the firearm.

Now I oil this thing down nearly every day when I'm done carrying it. So care isnt the issue. I guess the finish may just be a little bad. Oh well.

We'll see how it goes.

Here's a news flash.....even stainless can rust. I'm sure the mix of chromium, nickle and steel that S&W uses isnt inferior to the stuff the other manufacturers use. S&W has been in the stainless game for a LONG time, so they're not exactly amateurs.

I sent my SW 1911PD back for service. It was brand new and had Failures to return to battery. I sent it to SW for warranty work. The phone call I made originally the guy told me it would be about an 8 day turn around. Once it was in house they told me 2 to 3 weeks. That was a month ago and I called today, still hasn't shipped. Make sure you have other arrangements for your protection.

Here's a news flash, it's not a stainless slide. It's less than a year old and the rust is happened in the serrations and the logo, where its CUT INTO. Never happened with my kimber, nore any of my other firearms Ive carried. So I would say it is a defect in their blueing.

Sorry about that, but since you didnt specify which model you had I assumed that it was stainless(as are most).

Had the same thing happen with my S&W1911. It took them almost a month to replace the barrel. I was not impressed.

Here's a news flash. You are still a wannabe. Lol

Hey, you know that it's rough carrying guns here in Alabama where the humidity is out of sight and the summer months are hot as hades.

Bring me that G17 and I will give you half of what you paid for it. I ain't trading my G30 to you no matter how much you whine. Lol

17 is GONE... told you that... you were probably too busy stuffing your face with a dognut to hear it though. You don't use that 30 anyway. You need to get that 19 back from your sister who went to another country, ill give you what you sold it to her for... yeah i remember what it was too

Yeah, but I do clean/oil it after carry if i sweat a lot. It just was odd that it happened where they cut into the slide. And nowhere else on the slide. Maybe theyll take a look at that barrel crown too...kinda rough IMO

I sent my SC in and just got it back within 3 weeks. Id say their CS is pretty damn good. Especially since I didnt pay a dime to send it.

Yeah it was nice not having to pay... btu the woman at the fedex counter was "i have to see it for you to claim $1k in value. Ok lady, here ya go... " she was like "thats enough, we shouldnt even ship that"

I was about to remind her that I doubt her boss would appreciate her opinions with customers and i believe even more that he would like to hear the conversation she was having on the phone with a lobby full of customers...but I refrained when someone else asked what was her problem.

Bluing never did and never will prevent rust. CorrosionX, Eezox and BreakFree CLP will do the job with proper care. Please keep us posted on your experience with S&W.

I defer to Tripp Research for a concise bluing description:

"Bluing is technically called black oxide and is a surface conversion formed when steel is immersed in a caustic soda solution at about 285° F. The black oxide itself has almost no corrosion prevention qualities. It becomes a decent finish when a supplemental oil coating is added to it.

Bluing is an economical process which does not require individual racking of parts. We've all seen some very attractive blued firearms. It doesn't wear particularly well and requires constant oil down to avoid rust.

Historically, it has been a mainstay finish. Today, firearm companies are beginning to offer alternatives with superior performance."

Yeah, i know it doesnt do anything to prevent it, but Ive kept it oiled and clean. Just doesnt make sense that it happens where it is, and not anywhere else.

Oh well, it's rust... we'll see what SW says... if nothing, then I guess I can always go duracoat

Got it back today... looks great. They refinished it for me.

Just gotta dry it off, run a patch down the barrel and it's good to go. Man, they sure use a LOT of oil at SW.

That's great. Now for the "use test".

I have had good protection from Sentry Solutions Marine Tuf-Cloth.

on blue guns. My 1965 Gold Cup dose not have a spot of rust.

I carry it often along the Gulf Cost. However............

I have given up on maintaining blue finishes.

Blue is nice no doubt, but its hard chrome from now on for my

carry needs.

well ive been thinking about getting it refinished because i scratched the frame on a stubborn grip bushing. Little TOO much loctite on it from SW.

But I cant decide what color combo i want and if i want duracote or cerakote etc.

Read up on them but that never does anything for me

That's the exact reason why it rusted in the first place, and why it probably will again.

Don't dry it off.....keep a light coating of oil on it at all times...even when carrying it.

Sent mine in last month to have the barrel crown refinished and the grip safety fixed (rattled). Had it back within 8 days!

Although S&W service is excellent. And they pay both ways my two current S&W guns (1911Sc and 642) both had to be returned again after being serviced by S&W. The 642 had an ejection rod that was working it's way loose locking up the cylider from the box. I sent it in and had the gun back in about three weeks.
It came back with the finish all marred-up. I called them on it they said no problem ship it back on our dime. It came back perfect. My 1911Sc had to go back for plunger tubes twice.
The second time they had it for almost two months. Turns out I had a warped frame. They built a new frame for it and sent it back. My front sight to my MMC adjustable tritium
nightsights came back bent. How the hell they did that I'll never know. Called them again. They said just send it back. It's been gone three weeks. Called them Friday.
They appologized and said it should of been turned around in a few days for just a front signt. Said to call back Monday. I'm sure it will be fine when I get it back. But damn it gets old sending guns back again and again. Both guns shoot excellently BTW. And they do make it right. They just had to test the gun with the new frame. They must have seen the sight bent. Why the hell they shipped it back that way I'll never know. Oh well. They did send me a couple of free Novak mags for the trouble. And I really like the new M&P in 9mm. Don't really like the tool deal to break the gun down for cleaning though. But it looks great, feels great in the hand, looks very well made. Haven't got to try the trigger yet.
