View Full Version : Made a Kydex spare magazine carrier for my Kahr
http://home.off-road.com/~mithrandir/pistols/kahr/v2.0%20kahr%20on%20belt.jpg
Anyone need one? All I have is gray kydex for now, and I was wondering if this is a design anyone would like? Haven't decided if I'll even sell 'em or what $$$ to ask fellow Kahr owners for if I do yet.
Just checking to see if there's an intrest in them.
Ecmills: I would very much be interested in buying a couple of these mag carrier from you. How much are they and how would you like for me to pay for them.....Regards CNMT1...Oooops almost forgot it would be for a KahrP9/K9 magazine
I want to make enough money to make it worth buying a $120 sheet of black kydex when I run out of them, and to be worth the time and tool investment I have.
But I also want to give fellow Kahr owners a really good deal since it's not a professional product with adjustable retention. I also think it might bother some people that it's not black.
How does $15 each sound? (including shipping)
If that's okay, I need the following information:
How wide of a belt should it acommodate? (1.25, 1.50, or 1.75")
Are you left or right handed? (standard carry puts it on/behind off-hand's hip with rounds facing forward)
For now these are for a 9mm magazine only (should fit any 9mm Kahr). I'm working with josp to make one for the P45.
If for some reason anyone out there is willing to give me a .40 magazine body, I'll give you two mag carriers for free. (Unlikely, I know, but hopefully someone's interested and has a bad mag Kahr replaced under warranty or something).
I made some for my Glock, too. Here's my post on those (http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=542626).

Looks real nice. Keep up the good work. Wearing something that you made yourself gives that little extra pride...
;)
Don't worry Mr. Bender... I still carry in your in-pocket leather piece whenever I have to tuck my shirt. :)

I got your PM. Check your in-box. I'll start hacking on some Kydex tomorrow for you.
Hey can you make about the same thing, maybe with a bit of a tab instead of a belt holder. I want a spare in my pockets that does not dump rounds and a way to pop the holder off quick.
Thanks for any info
Rockets Out...
So basically, a kydex "cap" for the magazine that has a tab on it so you can pop it off the feed lips easily?
Yeah. That's pretty straightforward and I can make it without a problem. If you want it to stand up on end in the pocket, and don't carry anything else IN that pocket, then you might consider one of these (http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=532446&highlight=spare+magazine) as well.
If you're sure you just want a "cap" to keep the round from falling out when the magazine is stored in a car door pocket, glovebox, or pants pocket, let me know.
If I made it cover the magazine down to the hole that let's you see round #3 is present, and put a 1/2" or so tab on the side to pop it off really quick, I think it'd work quite well...
You got it, below is perfect, just fast and simple. Right side pop off so I can hit it with my thumb.

I'll give one of those a try when I finish CNMT's mag carriers.
"Jumping... is useless."
On another note, I changed the design of the magazine carreirs. If I decide to shoot IDPA with my Kahr (unlikley, that's what the Glock 34 is for) my spare mag carrier will pass tech now.
I moved it down about 1/2" on the belt, and it's much more comfortable. Keep in mind when looking at these zoomed-in pictures, that the Kahr mags are only 4.25" tall. I've been able to carry one all last week under an untucked Tshirt with no printing or stabbing pains in my side. Unless you're sitting in a car seat, you seriously can't feel it's presence. :)
Anyway, here's the new design. It still hangs down less than an inch from the bottom of the belt, and retains the magazine very well. You can invert it with a fully loaded mag and shake it like a can of spray paint with no issues, yet the draw is still super fast.
Let me know what you think cnmt1, because this is one of the two that'll be in the box I send you.

Hey I'll take a mag carrier... I wonder if I can dye the kydex to a darker color.
cnmt1's going to have mail soon. I'll drop these babies off at the post office tomorrow for you, John. Here's a couple pics of a pair of 'em.

Check your PMs. As far as making it black, paint it. Krylon Fusion paint is specifically for painting plastics and works very well - you should be able to find something equivalent at any hardware store. I painted the one I carry daily with this, and while the magazine has worn a couple gray spots on the inside, it's still black and shiny outside.
You have to put it on in very thick coats, so it takes 3-4 days to completely dry, though. But so far, so good. You can smack it with a sharp metal object like a pair of pliers and it won't show any damage. You may have to repaint it if you do something like scrub it against a brick wall, though. :)
I'm waiting to hear from a couple of local plastic suppliers on getting some black kydex. It looks like I've gotta buy several 4x8 sheets, which means several hundred dollars of investment. But since everyone's been asking for black, and I wish MY stuff was black, it might be worth it. I doubt I'd ever get my money back, though. It takes me about 45 minutes per mag carrier right now, and roughly $3-5 to ship it, and $50-75 worth of tools I bought for this stuff... means I'd have to sell in massive bulk to break even.
Short version: When companies are charging $20-30 each for these, they're really not gouging you. To make a living off of it, getting under $20 per unit including shipping is probably impossible.

And here's the conclusion that I've come to:
I've got no intrest in making these 'professionally' - I don't have the time to make all the Kydex I want for *ME* much less anyone else. The $$$ earned MIGHT pay for a big sheet of black kydex after a couple of months, but that's about it. If I had a 1911 magazine lying around, I'd make you one. But I don't, and unless I buy one someday, I'm not in a huge hurry to buy one.
So don't bother asking ecmills if you want one, cause now he's not going to make them.
