View Full Version : My new STI Trojan hates JHP's

I am new to the 1911 world. I have 7 Glock's, and just got my first 1911. I decided on an STI Trojan because everyone said they are very well put togther, and the best deal at $1,000. I love the pistol, it shoots great but it does not like JHP's. It will feed ball ammo all day long, but JHP's hang up 50% of the time. I have 250 rds through it, and I know everyone say's it takes 500 to break 1911's in, but I don't see that helping. The feed ramp is already polished, does anyone have any suggestions?

Wilson Combat #47D Mags should do the trick.

I agree that a Wilson 47D would be the first thing to try. If that doesn't work send the thing back to STI. They will make it right.
Try a different JHP. Lots of hollow points are too short for the 1911, especially the lighter ones like the 165 gr. I find 230 gr. Hydra-shoks work great.
First - caliber?
Second - as others suggested, try different ammo - not every gun feeds every brand. I'd call STI for a suggestion as to what feed well.

No offense. But a gun of that quality and price should feed anything. I am curious as to see what STI says about the problem. Either way the 47D mags are a easy fix and also add 1 round to the total carry.

are we sure this gun is a .45?

Yes it is a 45. I ran some more JHP's through it yesterday, and today, and they fed fine. I seated them a little deeper than the first batch I tried. The other thing I noticed, is if I load 7 rounds in the mag it feeds better than with 8. I have 400 rds through it now, and it seems to be getting better the more I shoot it. It's my first 1911, and I am having a lot of fun with it. Now I have to get one in 10mm. Thanks for all the help.
Reloads - the culprit revealed ;)
You can get a .40 cal STI trojan and have the chamber reamed for 10mm... swap a spring or two and you have a hell of a 10mm blaster for a great price.
Finally - I personally use 7 round mags in my .45s... I've tried 8 rounders and just prefer the 7s... with enough volume, the 8's eventually cause problems. If not, the FBI would have probably gone with the 8 rounders instead of the metalform 7s...
I seated them a little deeper than the first batch I tried. I'm wondering....does using improperly loaded reloads void the warranty?

Most companies will not replace your gun if you blow it up with reloads, but the money I save on ammo pays for the insurance 5x over. I reload 45 230 Gr. JHP's for $5.50 a box. A lot cheaper with lead bullets, and cheaper powder.
