I'm getting interested in Kimbers, particularly the Ultra Carry II.

Can anyone school me on this manufacturer and, if you own a Kimber, your personal opinion on the guns?

Thanks-
Rich

I had a Custom II TLE.

Like "Pulling The Goalie", it was an orgasm in your hands. Never a jam, recoil was very light, looked beautiful. Sucked having to sell it.

Five Kimbers and a Wilson, Wilson is my Least favorite. My Kimber Eclipse will shoot circles around it.

Would someone please comment on the ultra carry II? I've heard mixed results and I respect the opinions I get here.
Thanks-
Rich

I have heard that, as a general rule, the shorter the barrel lenght in a 1911-style pistol, the more prone it is to malfunction. I had a Pro CDP II and it never had a problem.

I have an Ultra Carry, but its not a II. It runs with everything and any magazine. From 230 gr hp and ball ammo to 155gr cast swc handloads. Just change the recoil spring every 800 rounds.

My understanding was that the original 1911 design was set up for a 5" barrel.

Then again, there's bushingless barrels and so forth.

I dunno. I like my CCII.

I have a Pro Carry which is essentially an Ultra Carry but with a 4" barrell and a standard grip. I have owned it for almost 10 years and it has always been a great shooter. Sorry I can't add any more info other than that I own 3 Kimbers and they are all good guns.

I advise you to search and read some posts on the 1911 Forum. Kimbers have had LOTS of function and reliabilty problems in the past. www.1911forum.com Beware of Kimbers.

I freely admit that my experiance is limited...

However, the ones I held at the NRA convention in Milwaukee yesterday were darn nice.

Kimber started out in (Clackamas..I think) Oregon and moved to Yonkers NY in the late 90's.

I really like my Custom II,ext extractor and all.:)

I had an Ultra Carry II and with the exception of how easily it scratched, I really liked its design. Unfortunately I had several problems including light primer strikes, FTF and FTE. The gun was in excellent condition and cleaned regularly, I also had several parts changed and even had other people try shooting it but the problems could never be solved. The Kimber was purchased as my primary carry gun but since I could not rely on it I decided to trade it for a Glock and all my problems disappeared.

Maybe I got a lemon but odds are I'll never buy another Kimber.

I have two, a CDPII and a Compact Custom, both bushing-less 4 inchers. Never had a hiccup with either, even using "Flying Ashtrays". The 230gr Hydroshocks shoot to point of aim on both, the CDPII is a little better though. The CDPII is noticeably lighter than the CC. The night sights are real nice too.

My Ultra Carry II takes a backseat to NO manufacturer's 1911. It's a great carry gun.

I own four and they're the most accurate firearms I've ever shot. My high end model is a Gold Match and I want a Super Match soon.

I had one. Extremely accurate for a 3" barrel. The original slide had an external extractor, and it had a few extraction problems. I sent it back to Kimber and they replaced that slide with an internal extractor type slide, and it functioned perfectly.
I just recently sold it because I bought a Wilson, and the wife said I had to part with some of the other toys to pay for it. Hope I don't regret it.
If you get one, try to get the internal extractor model, they almost always work perfectly.

I have 4 Kimbers. 2 5" TLE/RLIIs (EE), a 5" Gold Combat ("Series I), and an Ultra CDPII (IE).

I love all of my Kimbers.

As for the Ultra, I haven't shot it enough to comment on reliability yet, but I can tell you that it feels great in my hand, and it's awful purdy!!

Kimber builds a great 1911 for the money. Although I've never had a desire to own a 3" 1911. Here's some Kimber porn to spice up the thread.
