Hey all,
I just read in another post about how some of you were using Mobil 1 synthetic oil as a lube for pistols. I don't think I have ever heard of doing that but I have often thought about it when I go through the suto dept. in Walmart on my way to pay $5 for a little tube of "special" oil in the gun area.
Are there any negatives to using it? Does it smell? Have you all found it to work as well as some of the other high tech oils that are out there? It does sound like a real money saver.
I do use the Ultima Lube grease from Wilsons, do you think that the Mobil 1 grease would do just as well?
I have also thought of using Eds Red too.
Thanks for the help.

I've been using it for quite some time now on my personal firearms, mainly 1911's and AR's, and it works just fine. A racing buddy of mine gave me a half quart of it and it seems like it is going to last forever. I haven't had any issues in the hest or cold, haven't noticed any oders, function problems, migrating, extra cleaning, etc....Works just like Mil-Tec I have used in the past, but I don't think it is Chlorine based, which is a good thing.
Before this I used CLP, and still do from time to time, and never had any issues with it either.
As far as the greases go, they are just a pain in the ass to clean off. I have not seen where they have caused any less wear on a firearm, but I have seen where they hold and trap dirt and debris better. Out of any of them I have seen, the TW-25B is the best as far as holding in place and then wiping off when it is time to clean it. It even seems to leave a lubricity embedded in the metal, but that is just my observation, I have nothing scientific to base it on. I will say that a little goes a long, long way with that though.
That's pretty much all I use on all my guns. A quart goes a long way with some Q-tips. :rollsmiley:
i use militec-1 grease the first few outings with a gun (still usin it on my 1911), then once the metal feels smooth i'll switch back to oil. hey if it can withstand engines running at 7000 rpm, i think it can handle a gun's action

It's my understanding that much of the "gun oil" on the market is really repackaged Mobil One.

And you've been a member here since 1999? :holysheep:
Heck, get some and try it. It's good oil and sure won't hurt anything. A quart will last nearly forever. That said, I also think that if one keeps their guns properly cleaned just about any oil will do.
amother fan of Mobil 1 for my guns. No problems noted with any of them - revos or semi-autos.
Mobil 1 is the one to have. You could put some in small bottles and sell it to your friends as "SUPER DUPER SPECIAL GUN LUBE" and make a killing or give it away as birthday, xmas presents etc.

And here is the perfect container to do that with. The bottle on the left with the lavender top works great for gun lubing because it allows you to put out a drop at a time or you can squeeze it harder for more. The syringe also works well for grease. It's sold by Tap Plastics.

that's an excellent idea... provided that you have enough "friends" that shoot guns that you can scam. hopefully they dont read this forum
i work at a BMW dealership, i could get a case of oil for dirt cheap and market the stuff to hundreds of people lol

I could be wrong, and often am, but I was advised that if you can see the grease there is too much of it.

In my opinion, any of it is too much. I hate when I get a pistol in with that junk on it, again, the exception being the TW25B, that stuff is different than all of the slide glides, action majic's, etc....

I think any synthetic oil will do the trick. I use one for the rails only of my 1911.

There is no reason you can not use motor oil in your guns.
Personally, I like to use Eezox which is a CLP and has proven top-rate rust prevention qualities.
I prefer to not use a separate oil, cleaner, etc. except where necessary like on long guns.
I think that products like Eezox also build up a little over time (in a good way) and make the guns easier to clean.
My guns don't require any effort at all to clean; gunk just wipes right off.

I prefer not to use a CLP for anything. I am of the opinion that CLP is a jack of all trades, master of none. I want a cleaner to clean, and a lube to lube.
