Yes, it is very common to polish the outside of the barrel. Metal Polish and a Dremel with a felt bob. And yes it does smooth up the action when racking the slide. It reduces the friction between the slide and the barrel.
I did mine with 1500 grit sand paper (stroking it by hand), and then finished it up with a felt bob tipped dremel and some Flitz.
Here's an example of what it looks like.

MtnDewd yea i bet that looks alot better than that bead blast finish when its in your mk9!
Yeah, it does add to the appearance; as well as, seem to make it cycle a little more smoothly.

MtnDewd I think thats the way it should have been from the factory !but they dont so i guess i will try that like yours or i might try sending it to have a custom jewlling finish from the custom jewlling shop that has some nice looking work on their website,
It's not that difficult to do. It just takes some sand paper, dremel, felt bob, some Flitz or Jeweler's rouge, and a little patience.

Ditto, man! I did mine too as well as several other parts and inside the chamber and hand-lapped the bore. Big Help!

I did mine as well as the extractor. It made it feel a little smoother and made cleanup much easier. I started with some 320 grit sandpaper and gradually worked up to 2000. Then I just went to work with some Flitz and a Rotary Tool.
