Hi everyone. I've always had an interest in Military 1911 pistols. I've never owned a 1911, and prefer to carry Glocks. However, I'm thinking of getting a military 1911 for the range, and just for the nostalgia. I've seen a Springfield GI for $401, and a Rock Island for $380. Are these good prices, and are there other/better military repro's out there that I chould consider. What do you guys think?

If you want a bare bones military style 1911 that you could trust to carry as well as have fun at the range with then Springfield will do you right.
Ive havent heard many positive things about Rock Island.
Another basic 1911 Ive heard mixed reviews on could come from Dan Wesson.
The RIA is the bottom of the barrel 1911 in most people's view. They say you usually get what you pay for. It sounds as though a few people have gotten pretty decent ones, but if I were a gambling man, those are odds I wouldn't take.
For another $20, however the Springfieldis a much better gun, and that is pretty reasonable price for it. If ALL you want is a GI style 1911, that's the way to go, but be advised that these are infectious guns and if you catch the bug (very few are immune), you'll be buying another one or swapping parts very soon.

Thanks for the info, guys. I have my G 30 for serious work. For now I want the GI style .45 for nostalgia and fun at the range. I plan on leaving it stock.

I started out to get an SA MILSPEC, but a near-new (100 rounds) GI came into the shop at a really ridiculous price, so had to have it. I still love it, though. I put some slightly taller retro sights on it (for my eyes), did some trigger work (and had the sear/hammer squared up), and then I fit a $21 bushing to it, but it's still pretty stock looking.
It functions fine, and kicks out anything I feed it (also shoots pretty darned good), while looking kinda like a beater. Only cough I ever had was when I tried to feed it 4.3 of BE with a 185gr bullet; which would've been easily solved with a lighter recoil spring, but I wanted to keep it stock because it routinely digests full-house 230gr JHP's that will move the pins off the table. Enjoy your SA GI if you get it; very good price and great value for the money.

That's a great price, $401, for the Springfield GI...buy it.;)
Better ones: Colt WWI repro for around $1,000.
Easy choice for a "shooting gun".

On the other hand I have not heard many negative things about a rock island.
I have a springer GI and a buddy has the Rock Island, my springer is more acurate (barely) I like the finish on the Rock Island a little better and it has a standard Main Spring Housing. Between the two it would be a toss up...
Either would do well (Springer has a better warranty I would presume)
My springer after about 8000 rounds has needed only a new recoil spring (I was getting firing pin contact into ejection part of cycle)

I've owned my RIA milspec for almost two years, and have fired over 1500 rounds through it with no FTF problems using varied ammo makes, types, and it has proven to be extremely accurate up to 50 yards. Paid around $330.00. My son owns the Springer Milspec, paid around $425.00, couple of years ago. We've shot both side-by-side, and they appear equal in production quality and accuracy. For the small $$$ difference you're looking at, get the Springer, it has a higher resale value given the Springfield name recognition.

On Friday I bought a Springer 1911 GI milspec SS, forged slide, frame and barrel with titanium firing pin and arched MSH. Range test later today with several different factory rounds and some homebrew 970fps Golden Sabers in different mags.
1911s are an addicting platform and one of the most fun to shoot. :)
Adios,

If you want a straight GI, and dont intend to do much in the way of future modifications, I'd recommend the Springfield GI or mil spec. They have forged frames and slides(unlike the RIA) and Springfields warranty is as good as it gets.
Rock Island Armory's frame and slide are made by Armscor in the Philippines. The internals are supplied by Twin Pines, Inc. Rock Island Armory is TPI house brand.
Try this website for GI 1911s: www.armscor.com.ph. They have an office in the US. Their .40 hi-cap is a best seller in the Philippines.
