View Full Version : FMJ Ammo For Self Defense?
Ok, as we all know, decent SD ammo is pretty scarce - haven't seen any Silver or Brown Bear for months.
Could get some Wolf FMJ but have always been leery about carrying that in my Mak when it does CCW duty.
Any thoughts on this? Should I just wait for the ammo supply to pick up and use my G19 as my SD arm?
I know there is Hornady and PowRball out.

Personally, I carry with 95 gr FMJ. It simply works the best for me.
I have no problem using FMJ in my Mak-caliber pistols (CZ82 and Polish P64). I use fiocchi and S&B. My CZ82 has become my favorite HD and CCW pistol, and while I still have a supply of Silver Bear 115 JHP's, the FMJ load does a fine job also.

And I carry 9x18 Wolf in my Radom P64 every day. It goes bang every time I fire it, and has for years in all my Makarovs.
Have you had some bad experience with Wolf?
Wolf always works in my Ak and always worked in my Mak. Just that for SD, I figure you should have some sort of JHP.
Or at least thats what I have been brainwashed to think :)

I have seen first hand the 9mm FMJ round out of an M9 fail to stop a towlie so I'm going to say no, I'll stick to HP ammo, especially when the 9X18 is even smaller than the 9mm.

FMJ is fine. Get your hits, and use a bullet that won't underpenetrate.

6 rounds center mass (so much for propper shot placement) and doesn't even slow one down until a burst from the '60 dropped him in his tracks. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to trust it any time in this lifetime again!:soap:

Well, I'm not sure what a "towlie" is, but I probably will have to protect myself against a criminal, and I know what that is.
One hit from a .361 fmj bullet, and it should slow him or her down enough for me to get out of harms way. That's all I need to do.

Towlie: aka towel-heads, towlie-bans, ********s, Iraqi troops, etc.

No, I'm saying 9mm fmj is about one small step above a rock or pointy stick. Use it if you want to but my experience says you are a fool to do so if you have another option.

Nothing "works", short of .50 or explosives, unless you hit the right spot.
This is a pretty civil forum. I've long come to regret calling all Vietnamese "Gooks". Your jargon is better suited for the barracks, and even then someday you may come to reconsider too.

Just for kicks, what do you carry with you every day?

Likes to get high.
Laughs at your puny 9mm.
"Don't forget to bring a towel."
Personally, I like the Norinco FMJ.
I would side with penetration, placement.

Just got my Makarov, and so far, from my limited tests out in the desert, it's the Hornady 95 grain JHPs for me.
While the Hornady JHP bullet is a good one, it is not loaded to the full potential of the Makarov round. It is also overpriced, so I don't buy it. Around here, it is $12.95 a box of 20. I have a couple boxes of silver bear 115's left if I feel the need for JHP. How the russians are able to get 1000+fps from a bullet that weighs 20gns more that the Hornady is a puzzlement. If you are using Hornady, you might as well get a 380.
I am perfectly satisfied with Fiocchi and S&B FMJ's and their accuracy + penetration.
Wolf has not been a good 9mm Mak round for me. In the east german Mak I used to have, I had several rounds that needed two strikes to fire. In my CZ82, I had a couple rounds that jammed on the way into the chamber, as if the rim was a little to thick to go under the extractor ( a jam other CZ82 owners have reported with wolf). There have also been several reports on other forums of squib loads leaving the bullet in the barrel, a prescription for KB-action.

The Hornady bullet is slower than the Russian rounds, but it's odd how they designed it to reliably penetrate and expand. I've shot it into wetpack and so has Stephen Camp with impressive results. In terminal performance it competes well with the Russian HPs. In price, it doesn't.
Wolf has had reported squibs, but so have most other brands. So far I've had squibs from Silver Bear and Hornady. The Wolf 109-grain was a notoriously bad round, with many failures to feed and duds. The newer Wolf 100-grain hasn't had as bad a press, but the jury is still out.

IMO the Hornady XTP is a good JHP bullet. I don't understand why Hornady is loading the 9x18 down to 921 fps average.
The highest I've chronographed is only 945 fps and the lowest was 882 fps.
Could be they are loading down to what may be the weaker 9x18 pistols like the PA-63.
I've hand loaded the 95 grain XTP bullet to 1,100+ fps (for the Makarov) and in informal tests the bullet preforms noticeably better.
What I'd really like to see is Hornady or Speer (gold dot) come out with a 115 gr JHP .364 bullet. It would then surely be loaded by commercial manufacturers and hand loaders could work up some good defense loads.
I've reloaded some 115 & 120 grain pulled Silver Bear bullets and I couldn't get past the 1,000 fps that Silver Bear gets but I think a 115 grain Hornady XTP bullet doing 1,000 fps would be a excellent Makarov load.
I would be happy to see the XTP bullet or any other 95 grain JHP loaded to the full velocity we all know this cartridge is capable of.
Iwould like to see Mike Mcnett of Doubletap ammo tackle this.

I seem to recall reading that the hotter Makarov loads can batter the frame of a PA-63 gun. Hornady may be succumbing to American Litigation Sydrome by only offering ammo that absolutely will not hurt ANY gun out there.
So how hot is this ammo? I know their .32ACP FMJ (70gr) is probably the hottest (at that weight/config) on the market. Is it the same for the 9x18 or is Fiocchi hotter?
