I re-qualified for my CHL yesterday, and, as last time, used Natasha, my East German carry Mak. I shot a perfect score. (Not hard to do on the Texas test, especially with a Makarov.)
I hadn't used her in awhile, but took her to the range a couple of times over the past week to prepare. I keep her nice and clean.
For some reason, Saturday night, I got her out to pack her up with the ammo for the shoot, and gave her a "Mak check" shake. There was nothing but silence. I popped the slide off and tried to remove the firing pin, and it was reluctant to slide out of the channel. After a bit of cleaning, I found an amazing amount of gunk there.
Of course, cleaning that channel after every shoot isn't necessary, but I remember when I test shot her that her "Mak rattle" sounded a bit muffled. I've learned my lesson. From now on, as soon as the rattle sounds a bit muffled, I'll clean the channel.
Learn from my experience, and remember, gunk in that channel can cause the firing pin to lock forward, causing a slam-fire full-auto condition at the range. Give your Maks a loving shake once in a while, and make sure you hear that rattle!
