View Full Version : Going nuts deciding on a scope for my 700P!!!
I'm going nuts trying to decide on a scope to get for my .308 700P.
Tons of people have suggested a Super Sniper, but I do not want a fixed power scope. I've also heard wonderful things about Leupolds, but not many other brands seem to impress people.
Here is the criteria...
1. Price range between $300-$400. I could go a LITTLE higher but not much.
2. Magnification above the 3x9 range.
3. Shock/Water proof. I want something that is real tough and not going to fail when I need it no matter what the conditions.
It will be used for whitetail hunting, but also target shooting.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I don't think you can beat Leupold, price for price, but I have never been able to bring myself to spend as much as, or more, for a scope then I spent on my rifle. That being said, I have a Bushnell 3200 which is a 5x15x42 with an adjustable objective on my 308. It was in the 300 dollar price range, and the optics are extremely, and the A.O. so accurate that I use it as a rangefinder. You just turn the dial until its perfectly focused and read the yardage on the dial. Tells you right there how far to your target!
Hope this helps! Good luck.

Don't have one, but I was lookin' at the Nikon monarch series. In that price range. Nikon makes very good optics. Lots of people like them.
I want something that can go back & forth between my AR & bolt gun. Target/hunting.
You have a lot of choices.

Sightron. Check the SII series with target knobs. They are excellent scopes and fit your price range.
Midway USA and Natchez sell them.

I second the Nikon's, great scopes. I got a Nikon Monarch UCC Scope 5.5-16x44, for $360 delivered. Mounted on a .223 Savage and I usually shoot at 200 yards. More than happy.
Be sure you do a complete internet search, I found prices for my scope varied between $500 - $350, with only a few below $400.

What's the difference between a Leupold and a Bushnell or a Nikon???
Thanks!

Go to this site: www.riflescopes.com and find the link to Optics Talk.
Also note they have a link to used and refurbed and demo optics on the site.
Also check this scope out http://www.streichers.com/ProductDetail.aspx?Catalog=Guns%20and%20Ammo&Category=SCOPES&Prod=LEU-S45266

For crying out loud. Just buy the 10x Super Sniper now and then sell it to buy the Super Sniper variable that will be out in a year or so.
Here it is on my 700 Tactical:

Wait, so a variable unit is definitly coming out???
Is there anything that compares to the super sniper but is variable NOW?
I'm not much for buying and selling. I like to do it right the first time. I might be pretty damn picky, but I love every gun I own because it's exactly what I want. Not close, not almost perfect, it's prefect or I don't buy it in the first place.
That's probably why I'm so particular with the scope decision.
Thanks!

Then I would go with the Streichers deal before it goes away.

So much energy and bandwidth has been wasted and it is no longer funny! Nor warranted. Solid advice has been rendered many times over. Buy a super sniper and some decent Warne rings and you are set. It is a serviceable scope set up for 350 bucks. Go out and shoot your gun instead of over thinking about it! I assure you that time on the range and learning to shoot will be much more pleasureable then talking about! Put the this thread and the other one to rest! Go shoot! There is more to shooting then gear having a glizty name on the side of a scope!
