fixed or removable flash suppressor

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a fixed or removable flash suppressor?

I'm in the analytical stages of purchasing my first black rifle, currently the Bushmaster line is in the lead. I assumed that their barrels were a true 16" length, but customer service advised me that the bbls were 16" plus the length of the removable suppressor.:soap:

Does anyone out there make a "true" 16" barrel, flash suppressor included?

With a removable flash hider you have to have a 16" barrel unless you want to wander into SBR (Short Barrel Rifle) territory and the insuing fees and forms from the BATF. A 16" makes it easy to change from a hider to a brake to a compensator or whatever. It also allow you to change or remove the FSB and handguard ring.

You can get a 14-1/2" barrel with a permanently attached flashhider that brings it to 16" total with no SBR headaches.

Most users will want to go with a 16" barrel with removable FH. It just gives you more options when you start tinkering with the rifle (which will happen in time). Increased velocity is also a plus. If you really need it to be shorter, you can go with a 14.5 with a perm attached FH, like the vortex or phantom which will make it legal length.
