Finally sent off my CMP order for my 1st Garand. Ordered the Springer USGI Field Grade. Even though it's backordered, I can't wait! I figure I'll use this as my "starter" Garand and work it from there.

Sorry, just happy:cool:

One thing that kills me is I drove right down I-20 in Alabama last week, and didn't remember to stop at the South Store:frown:.

Get some ammo while you're there, the Greek HXP is a good deal.

LOL, I snail mailed my order anyways. Add onto that the 90-120 day wait on a backordered item. Hmm, maybe my Garand will be home for Christmas;) .

I FedEx'd my order for a USGI SA FG to them on June 8th, which means they received it on the 9th.

I got the following email from them at 09:32 this morning (June 14th):

We thank you for your order and request you not call or email to check on
the order before 21 days are up. There is nothing we will be able to tell
you until we input all orders ahead of yours into our system. Your customer
ID # is ****** and this is where all of your information is stored therefore
you are registered with cmp/estore. Also your email password is <snip>. Let me
know if you are able to log in. Thank you and have a great day.
Sandra K Turner

So we'll just have to be patient.

Check the CMP Forums (http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/), namely the CMP Sales Forum. There are a few threads running there that tell how long the turnaround has been on the most recent orders.

From what I've read, you'll get a better rifle by ordering and waiting. The instore racks are pretty well picked over & they don't get resupplied until they sell out.

I just got my springfield, service grade. Bore looks almost new. It took about 2 1/2 months. Worth the wait.

Get the ammo. I ordered a strap too.

My order went into processing (status: Open) today.

So I sent the paperwork on June 8th, got confirmation of their receipt of my order on June 14th, and it went into processing on June 26th.

Edited to clarify that the processing status is "Open" on the website.

The email says "processing", but the E-store says, "Open".

I got my last two service grades last week, the one I restocked I will be shooting in matches. Both rifles had barrels that looked essentially new with very tight muzzles. The wood was terrible on one and terrifying on the other. Terrible cleaned up OK, terrifying is wearing a new Boyd's.

I ran a 5 shot string of 69 Greek HXP into 2.0" at 100 yards off the bench. That is more than accurate enough for the NRA high-power matches we have at our range. At $0.24/rd delivered, the price is unbeatable if you're planning to compete.

Order processed on the 28th. I have an order in for a couple of cans of Greek HXP in enbloc mags. I also noticed they are selling unfinished stocks, so I might have a recourse if mine looks like yours Brian.

Can't wait. I'm also taking the Gewehr 98 out to scout the outdoor range here at Ft Polk this Wednesday, never shot it at more than 25 yards.

Update:

My order was sent from the FedEx facility to CMP on June 8th.

I just checked the E-Store, and my battle rifle has shipped! It will arrive tomorrow, and it looks like I'll actually be home to receive it (otherwise, my wife can stay home for it).

I ran the serial number and she was born in 1944!

:dancing:

49 days from the day I sent the paperwork until the day I receive the rifle.

Not bad.

Edit: I found a chart at http://www.jouster.com/serial/Springfield.html that shows it was born in July of '44. So maybe she saw action before the end of the war.

I can't wait to get this rifle!

49 days for something that the website said 90-120 days? Not too shabby at all. I'm jealous, but since my order went in not too long after yours HOPEFULLY I'll be seeing the same thing.

Also, did you see that CMP was now selling new Garand stocks? I might order one if my stock is shredded.

Thanks for the link as well!

Yep, I'm going to have to leave a note on the door to arrange a link up with Fed Ex. I'll be in this stupid school I got sent to. Hopefully they'll let one of my neighbors sign for it, since the nearest Fed Ex place is in Alexandria-45 minutes away.

This rifle definitely has character. :)
SN: 568*** gives it a born on date of early 42.
Function checks were flawless right out of the box. It has seen some depot time with an all dark walnut stock with RRA(Red River Arsenal), square “P”, and a faint “S.A.?” cartouches. Stock has some dents, dings and 1 gouge, front hanguard is lighter in color, and looks to be birch. She was definitely an issue rifle, as you can see faint leftover of paint in the left rear of the stock where a unit would stencil rack numbers.

All the metal is SA except for a newer set of HRA rear sights. Metal is corrosion free, even under the buttplate. Some finish is worn off the unusual places, such as the muzzle, and gas cylinder lock. From what I can see so far, the rifling and bore look clean. Things like the op rod, gas tube, and trigger mechanism look CLEAN.

Some of the important part #s:
Barrel: D35448-35-Y-225-A Date on side is 6-46
Bolt: 6528287-SA US2 (Korean era?)
Op Rod: 6535382 SA
Trigger Housing: 6528290-SA

I’m still doing some research online, and I’m tempted to buy some books/contact SA for more info. It is not as pretty as yours Cjlandry, but I’m VERY pleased. I can’t wait to hit the range with my spam cans of Greek clipped 30-06. Pics will come when I get over this hate/hate relationship with my camera :) My current theory is it served in WWII and maybe Korea, went to Red River Arsenal for a makeover, and got issued back out again. Looks like she stayed in the military system.

Right now it’s completely torn down, being cleaned up. I won’t be able to hit the range until late August. The only part I’m looking to replace is the front handguard with a dark walnut one. I’ve done some looking, and it’s hard to find one with the metal on it.

I haven't even bothered to look at the numbers on the other parts. I'm just very pleased with how it shoots.

I'm thinking of getting some spare parts for it, since I've been shooting it so much and have no plans to slow down any time soon. Do all of the parts interchange, or do I have to look for specific numbers on certain parts?

The part #s on various smaller parts are called "drawing numbers". They have nothing to do with being fitted for a particular rifle or somehow matching with the receiver serial number (like Luger parts). I believe they are just there to identify the manufacturer.

My armorer doesn't neccessarily agree with EVERYTHING on this site but he thought their spares list was a good idea. Since I had already bought most of the first line items at Numrich I was glad to get some validation.

http://www.fulton-armory.com/M1Spares.htm

Parts is parts, even for the Winchester made Garands *blech* but you might have a bit of fitting to do.

I've got mostly mixmasters and they shoot well.

Got my field grade Sprinfield yesterday....it may not be the prettiest rifle but its beautiful to me.

Wood looks bad but is fairly solid, the action is very tight in the stock....no wobble. The front handguard it loose, but not in danger of coming off. There are gouges, there are divets.....I will just consider them "character" builders. The front handguard doesnt match the rest of the stock.

The internal parts look immaculate.....no excessive wear, no rust.....the spring wasnt weak, everything is nice and tight.

The barrel isnt the best. I dont have a gauge but the muzzle looks fairly worn. The barrel is shiny but there are just a few "rough" spots in the barrel...I didnt get to crazy cleaning it out so maybe it will come around after a few shots.

Overall its what I expected for the money....and I own an M1 Garand, I have ALWAYS wanted one. Now I need to rent some war movies.

It's a mighty fine looking rifle to me too!

Regarding the front handguard, it's supposed to be a little loose, otherwise it would alter your zero you heat up the barrel. There's supposed to be a gap between the receiver and the rear handguard (just enough so it isn't touching), and your barrel is supposed to be free-floating from the receiver, not touching the stock anywhere.

Check out this link (http://battlerifles.ambackforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=26735) for more info on how everything should fit, how to check it, and what to do if it's not correct.

I got lucky. Mine all fit properly, and I didn't have to remove any wood anywhere.

The furniture on yours sounds, and looks, just like mine. You're right, it's character! I am on the lookout for a Walnut front handguard with metal in it already. Preferably used so it doesn't stand out. Haven't found a source yet.

Where did you get the sling??? Mine didn't come with one, and I'm jealous :) .
Congrats on the nice looking piece of American history!

CJ, NICE link!!!! Thanks.

My CMP guns looked very similar. You stock looks like Walnut and will refinish very nicely. If you don't have a gauge to check muzzle you can use a bullet and stick it into the muzzle. If the bullet doesn't go all the way to the brass you should be okay. The last CMP gun I received was a Muzzle Erosion of a 3 I got lucky. Enjoy the gun you will love it.

Cool, using the bullet test(Greek HXP), I still have a good 1/4" before it hits the brass.

Any reccomendations on touching up the finish? I don't want to steam out the dents, etc. I just want to clean her up and help preserve the wood. I was thinking about Tung or Boiled Linseed Oil.

I learned some valuable information on the C&R stock cleaning forum. Might have to register to see it.

http://p102.ezboard.com/fparallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforumsfrm34

The first thing to do is get the old oil, dirt, grunge out of the stock before using Tung Oil or BLO. Don't do crazy things like using oven cleaner or running your stock through the dishwasher. I used laquer thinner to clean mine. Then used Behr's Tung Oil Finish. There are other products, just be sure you use the right ones.

Thanks for the tips Bushbacker. I'm going to lightly run some mineral spirits over mine to clean the gunk off it. I think I need to test out some BLO vs Tung Oil on a few different pieces of wood before trying it on the Garand stock.

Also, if you guys keep putting good links on here, my favorites will be full;) . Yet another good link, thanks Bushbacker!

Mine I used Bix paint stripper and then some sanding. I went with the Formby's Tung oil myself. Gave the gun a nice shine. I heard LOWE's carries BLO, but I couldn't find it locally. My advice is that leave the clip on the rear handguard when refinishing. Unless you have the tool it is a real pain to get off and on. The CMP Greek ammo is the best I have shot so far. I got some from Korea and it didn't function as well. Welcome to the Garand club. It will soon become your favorite rifle. :laughabove:

By "function", do you mean groupings, or mechanically feeding, firing, ejecting?

The Garand is definitely my favorite rifle, and I've only had mine for a couple of weeks.
